Barrow v Aston Villa U21 – Both Teams To Score and over 2.5 goals

EFL Trophy match at Holker Street, Barrow-in-Furness
7:00pm

Aston Villa U21s travel to a Barrow side who are already eliminated from the EFL Trophy.

The hosts have lost both games so far, going down 2-3 at home to Bolton before losing 3-0 at fellow League Two side Fleetwood Town.

Aston Villa U21s, on the other hand, are top of the group, having beaten Fleetwood 2-3 before scraping past Bolton Wanderers on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The visitors are struggling in the league, sitting 21st out of 26th after losing four on the bounce. Josep Gombau’s Villa side are certainly entertaining, scoring 13 and conceding 21 goals in eight games at an average of 4.25 goals per match. BTTS and over 2.5 goals has landed in all bar one of their league games, the exception being a 1-1 draw with Leeds u21.

Barrow league games are more understated, averaging just 1.86 goals. However, their two EFL Trophy games have combined for eight goals.

With the Bluebirds already out of the competition and a crunch league game against AFC Wimbledon a few days later, expect heavy rotation. Villa’s youngsters, do not have a game for three weeks, so a strong side is expected, as well as a few first-teamers recovering from injuries over the international break.

Lincoln City v Man City U21  – Both Teams To Score and over 2.5 goals

EFL Trophy match at Sincil Bank, Lincoln
7:00pm

The final qualifying spot in Group 8 is still up for grabs between the two sides on the same points, goal difference and goals for/against. It should be a straight shoot-out and an entertaining game is in store.

In the league, the Imps are performing well, sitting in fifth place. With 21 goals scored and 17 conceded in 14 matches, their games are averaging 2.71 goals. Six of their seven home games have seen at least three goals.

Their EFL Trophy campaign started with a 1-0 loss at Chesterfield before beating local rivals Grimsby 1-2.

Man City u21s are taking the Premier League 2 by storm, winning seven of their eight games and scoring 30 goals in the process. Every league game has seen at least three goals, with ten-man Everton and strugglers West Brom and Norwich failing to score against them.

City have scored in both EFL Trophy games and should find themselves on the scoresheet against a leaky Lincoln defence once more.

Wycombe Wanderers v Crawley Town – Over 3.5 goals

EFL Trophy match at Adams Park, High Wycombe
7:00pm

Another game that’s a straight shoot-out to qualify sees last year’s runners-up Wycombe host Crawley at Adams Park.

AFC Wimbledon top Group 9 with six points, with Brighton second on four points, leaving Wycombe and Crawley behind on three points and two points respectively. Matt Bloomfield’s side started their campaign with a 1-0 loss at AFC Wimbledon before an entertaining 5-3 win over Brighton u21s, putting them firmly in the driving seat heading into this game.

Wycombe have been on top form in the league, gaining 32 points from 14 games, topping the top-scorer charts with 32 goals. In their 20 games in all competitions, there has been an average of 3.45 goals pre match.

Crawley defied the odds by gaining promotion to League One through the playoffs last season. However, this came with consequences as the squad- on and off the pitch, was gutted by other sides. With a new-look side, they sit 21st in the league.

Their EFL Trophy campaign started with a 2-2 draw against fellow Sussex side Brighton u21. They then lost 3-4 to AFC Wimbledon. In their 20 games in all competitions, there has been an average of 3.25 goals.

Stevenage v Gillingham – Under 2.5 goals

EFL Trophy match at Broadhall Way, Stevenage
7:00pm

This game could be a snooze-fest. Stevenage are 14th in League One with 11 goals scored and 16 conceded and an average of 1.8 goals per game. Of their 15 league games, a league-high of 11 have seen less than three goals, as well as both EFL trophy games.

They currently sit second in Group 12, knowing only a Gillingham win will see them knocked out.

Gillingham have lost both EFL Trophy games and have to win to qualify on goal difference. A 1-0 win over League Two table toppers Port Vale halted a run of seven games in all competitions without a win, losing six of those.

Like Stevenage, Gills games are low-scoring, averaging 1.86 goals. Of their seven away games, only the 2-1 loss to Bradford has seen more than two.

With both teams games seeing a low count, plus the magnitude of the game on qualification, it would not be a surprise to see another low-scoring stalemate.

Huddersfield Town v Man United U21 – Over 3.5 goals

EFL Trophy match at the John Smith’s Stadium, Huddersfield
7:45pm

League One side Huddersfield are heavy favourites to beat Premier League 2 side Man United u21, despite the Red Devils sitting above the Terriers in Group 6.

Michael Duff’s team are currently 8th in League One after a disappointing draw at strugglers Crawley. They are also two points behind Man United in the group, so they know nothing but a win is good enough to qualify, so expect them to push from the start.

Man United u21s have had a mixed start to their Premier League 2 season and are 14th. With 19 goals scored and 18 conceded in just eight games, their league matches average 4.62 goals. Six of these eight have seen at least four goals.

Their matches have also been entertaining in the EFL Cup, beating Barnsley 2-3 thanks to three goals in the last ten minutes before beating Doncaster on penalties after a 96th-minute Louis Jackson equaliser saw them draw 3-3.

It’s not just in the league and EFL Trophy where the Red Devils are seeing high-scoring games. They also defeated Forest Green Rovers 2-3 in the new National League Cup. A similar high-scoring affair is expected on Tuesday.
