Brighton represents a stiff test for Pep Guardiola’s side, having started the season in impressive fashion under Fabian Hurzeler. There was a notable degree of turnover in both the playing squad and the staff in the summer which threw Brighton’s prospects up in the air, but Hurzeler, the 31-year-old German, has been a seamless fit for this group of players and the Seagulls have very realistic ambitions to play European football again next season.

New signings Ferdi Kadıoglu and Georginio Rutter, signed from Fenerbahce and Leeds in the summer, have been particularly eye-catching, with Kadıoglu providing an injection of high-end athleticism and a potent goal threat from wide areas, while Rutter’s unpredictability has translated well to Premier League football from the league below. The Seagulls have also benefited from the development of young midfielders Jack Hinshelwood and Yasin Ayari. Hinshelwood broke into the first team under Roberto De Zerbi last season and consistently delivered impressive performances as a full-back, but Hurzeler has given him the responsibility of playing in midfield this season, his natural position, and the England U21 international is starting to lay down a marker. Likewise, Ayari looks like he’s finally starting to deliver on his immense potential after a pair of underwhelming Championship loans.

The battle for European places seems like it’s going to be immensely competitive this season, so it will take a huge effort from Brighton to finish as a top seven team, so they will have to find ways to take points from teams of City’s prominence. They will feel as though they’re facing City at the perfect time to pull off an upset, with Guardiola’s charges currently a very wounded animal. City are second in the Premier League with 23 points from ten games.

The visitors find themselves in a very interesting position – from a neutral perspective, at least – as the dynasty that has been built over the past eight years under Guardiola is, for the first time, showing signs of cracking. The Cityzens won a fourth straight Premier League crown last season, but even in what was an overwhelmingly successful campaign, there were indicators the team’s level was dropping, evidenced by the quality of performances against fellow “Big 6” opponents. Now, City have been descending into a gradual decline as the opening months of the season have worn on, they’ve reached a point where both results and performances have been alarmingly poor.

City look uncharacteristically rigid and stale going forward, with Phil Foden unable to recapture last season’s form while Erling Haaland, despite his impressive goal tally, continues to have issues in certain games against higher-quality opponents. Defensively, things are even more worrying, with Guardiola’s side amateurishly vulnerable and open in transitions. It would take a brave punter to bet against Guardiola and City finding solutions to their issues and peaking later in the season, after all there’s plenty of precedent for that over the last few seasons, but with Rodri out for the campaign and a few key members of the squad starting to age out, City’s problems seem a little bit more fundamental this season.

Brighton Team News

The Seagulls have a lengthy injury list with Yankuba Minteh, Adam Webster and Solly March all out injured, while Joao Pedro, James Milner and Matt O’Riley are major doubts. Ayari is also unlikely to feature, after picking up a knock at Liverpool last weekend, so Carlos Baleba will deputise in the Swede’s absence if he’s deemed unfit.

Predicted Brighton XI: Verbruggen; Veltman, Van Hecke, Igor, Estupinan; Kadıoglu, Hinshelwood, Baleba, Mitoma; Rutter, Welbeck.

Man City Team News

Rodri will play no further part this season, while Oscar Bobb is unlikely to feature again until the new year as he continues his recovery from a broken leg. The Blues are also likely to be without John Stones, Jack Grealish and Ruben Dias, all of whom are sidelined with injuries

Predicted Man City XI: Ederson; Lewis, Akanji, Ake, Gvardiol; Kovacic, Bernardo, De Bruyne, Foden, Savinho; Haaland.

Form Guide

Brighton’s form is solid as they enter this game with two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five games. Those two losses both occurred in the Seagulls last two outings, a league and EFL Cup double header against Liverpool, the latest of which at Anfield last weekend. Brighton performed admirably and were comfortably the better team for the best part of an hour, after Kadıoglu had given them the lead with an exquisite finish after 14 minutes.

However, in typical Liverpool-at-Anfield fashion, the Reds turned the game on its head with two goals in two minutes from Gody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, consigning Brighton to a 2-1 loss. Before that, Brighton were beaten 2-3 by Liverpool at the AMEX, a result that followed a 2-2 draw against Wolves, a 1-0 win over Newcastle United and a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Tottenham.

Manchester City, for the first time in a long time, are coming into this game on the back of a three-match skid. City were hammered in the Champions League in midweek following a sorry performance in Lisbon, as a Viktor Gyokeres-led onslaught saw City fall to a 4-1 loss. That game was preceded by a 2-1 loss at Bournemouth, where a late comeback attempt could not gloss over a shoddy performance. Other results lately include a 2-1 loss at Tottenham, a 1-0 win against Southampton and a 5-0 win over Sparta Prague in Europe.

Brighton v Man City – Prediction

Given the level of their performances of late, this is a very dangerous game for City. A win would be huge, but there’s plenty of reason to doubt that outcome, with Guardiola’s side losing three on the bounce. City have seen both sides find the back of the net, while Brighton have had BTTS occur in four of their last five matches. Similarly, over 2.5 goals have been scored in four of both teams last five outings.
There’s a good chance we’ll see an entertaining affair here, but it’s far from likely to be straightforward for the visitors.
