Following their heroics in beating Bayern Munich, Aston Villa then went and beat Bologna in the Champions League. Can they make it three wins from three when they travel to Belgium to take on Brugge?

The defeat away to Spurs over the weekend should be a real wake-up call for Villa, a way to remind themselves, and the fans that stepping up to become a Champions League side is very difficult. Look at what happened to Newcastle two seasons ago.
Newcastle’s result against Arsenal could signal the end of their slump they’ve been in since the highs of the 2022/23 season.
Aston Villa now must understand this. Unai Emery is a master of it but it’s one thing navigating a Spanish team or a French team in league and European competition and another thing to navigate a team also involved in the Premier League. The level of competition in the Premier League is much higher than in those other leagues.
It’s certainly an eye-opener for Emery. But, Villa have a great manager in him and they can turn it around.
They’ve got enough experience in the squad to win here. Players like John McGinn become very important in games like this. Of the players around him, he’s not the most glitziest or glamorous but he’s a very, very good football and a leader within that group, so I’d fancy him to score here.
I see this one ending 0-1 to the Villa, so it’s Villa to win, both teams to score, no, and John McGinn to score.
