Both teams to score
Liverpool and Leverkusen have both conceded just a solitary goal in their opening three Champions League games this season. In comparison, both sides have scored six goals apiece in their opening three games.
In fact, the only thing that separates Liverpool and Leverkusen in this newly-devised Champions League table is Leverkusen’s draw at Brest in their most recent outing. Liverpool currently sits in second place on nine points, and Leverkusen are just behind them in sixth on seven points.
Both sides have been pretty much impeccable at the back so far in Europe but are both likely to concede on Tuesday.
For one thing, they both average two goals per game in the Champions League this season and it is hard to see either attack drawing a blank. For another, neither have been exactly convincing at the back in their respective leagues recently.
The Reds have conceded in each of their last four domestic games, facing around 10 shots per game in their last five league games.
On the other hand, the German side recorded their first league clean sheet of the season in a 0-0 draw against Stuttgart on Friday night and have conceded an eye-catching 15 goals in their opening nine games of the campaign.
It is hard to see either team keeping a clean sheet on Tuesday night, especially facing such a dangerous attack. Xabi Alonso’s return to Anfield should be littered with goals.
Mohamed Salah to score
Mohamed Salah completed Liverpool’s turnaround against Brighton with an exceptional goal 18 minutes from time on Saturday afternoon as the Egyptian forward continues his excellent start to the season.
Salah has scored eight goals in 15 games in all competitions for Liverpool this season and has scored in each of his last three league appearances, rescuing a point against Arsenal and securing a vital win against Brighton.
Salah is, quite simply, the most likely player on the pitch to find the back of the net on Tuesday night. He is currently in excellent goalscoring form and represents a good bet to score against Leverkusen.
Florian Wirtz to have 1+ shots on target
Liverpool boast the best defence in the Premier League at the ten-game mark, but they are allowing a significant number of shots against.
The Reds faced almost 10 shots per game in the league this season, significantly higher than Manchester City’s average of seven shots faced per game.
They are also facing well over three shots on target per game, with Brighton recording five on Saturday.
It is fair to assume that Leverkusen, who average seven shots on target in the Bundesliga and almost six shots on target per game in Europe, will cause significant problems for the Liverpool defence.
No Leverkusen player has recorded more shots on target this season than Florian Wirtz. The German prodigy has registered 13 shots on target in the league this season and five in Europe, coming in at just under two shots on target per 90 minutes in both competitions.
He averages well over three shots per game this season and will surely try his luck on a number of occasions on Tuesday.
Over 4.5 cards
Both sides boast almost identical disciplinary records at this early stage of the Champions League.
The Reds have picked up seven yellow cards in their opening three games, while Leverkusen are just one card behind them on six.
Leverkusen have also committed the 10th-highest number of fouls in the 36-team competition, averaging almost 12 per game, while Liverpool commit an average of roughly 10 fouls per game.
Tuesday is likely to see a fairly high number of cards, considering both sides average at least two cards per game and a substantial number of fouls. The magnitude of the game, a clash between two of the better sides in the competition, is also likely to add to the tension on the night.
Edmond Tapsoba to commit 2+ fouls
No Leverkusen player has committed more fouls this season than Edmond Tapsoba. The Burkinabe centre-half has committed 11 fouls in nine league appearances this season and two fouls in two starts in the Champions League.
Coming up against a lightning-quick attack such as Liverpool’s, he is likely to be drawn into situations requiring him to commit fouls.
Considering Leverkusen are averaging around 12 fouls per game in Europe this season, it is fair to assume that they will reach that number again in a difficult away venue like Anfield. Tapsoba is good value to be responsible for at least two of those fouls.
