Newcastle v Arsenal Betting Tips

Arsenal to win and under 2.5 goals
Correct score:  Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal

WHEN: Saturday, 2nd of November, 12:30pm
WHERE: St. James’ Park, Newcastle
TV: TNT Sports 1

Arsenal return to the scene of one of last year’s biggest controversies on Saturday. Their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle at St. James’ Park, which almost a year to the day was famous for Anthony Gordon’s winner, where there were debates over whether the ball went out of play, whether there was a foul or a handball in the build-up to the goal – prompting Mikel Arteta to label it as “a disgrace’”.

The Gunners travel north in desperate need of the points, as failure to win could see their title hopes virtually dashed, even this early in the season, with the risk of ending the weekend eight points behind defending champions Manchester City.

The hosts, meanwhile, are in a league rut of their own, failing to win any of their last five, putting them as close to 17th place Crystal Palace as they are to Saturday’s opponents. The big problem Eddie Howe’s side have is finding the net, with a run of four games without scoring an open-play goal. Chelsea assisted with that though, as Alexander Isak netted in both the league defeat to the Blues last weekend and the Carabao Cup victory in midweek, however their reliance on him is a concern for the Magpies.

Arsenal’s normally tight defence under Arteta has been breached on four occasions in the last two league games but having been down to ten men against Bournemouth and then losing two players to injury against the quality of Liverpool can justify that. The return of William Saliba is welcome and will make it even harder for a struggling Newcastle attack.

That doesn’t mean a comfortable Arsenal win though. Arteta’s approach to games of late has been slightly more pragmatic, with Jamie Carragher even suggesting the Arsenal boss’ style was morphing into that of Jose Mourinho. His preference to line-up with sometimes as many as four centre-backs, alongside his use of similar-minded midfielders, in Martin Odegaard’s absence has created some issues going forward. The decision to try and protect the 2-1 lead against Liverpool backfired, so how the Spaniard approaches this game will be interesting, given this is one of the toughest away ties of the campaign.

Set-pieces will be interesting in this game as well. The Gunners were the dominant side last season and scored again from a free kick last weekend to place them joint top for set-piece goals in 2024/25. Arteta’s side have conceded from corners in each of their last two league games as well, however, with their four goals let in this season from set plays the second highest they appear more defensively vulnerable from deadball situations.

We’re expecting a tight game, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if a set-piece were to settle it.

Newcastle Team News

Gordon missed the league game with Chelsea last week, but played 73 minutes of the cup game, suggesting he will be OK to feature on Saturday. There are no fresh injury concerns for Howe but he still has a list of long-term absentees including Callum Wilson and Sven Botman.

Arsenal Team News

Odegaard is back training at Arsenal and has reportedly been working hard to be available for this fixture, but it’s expected to be too early for a return. Centre-back Gabriel went off against Liverpool, and was left out of the squad for the midweek win at Preston as a precaution, but is expected to be available. Saliba returned from suspension in midweek.

Form Guide

Newcastle’s league form has been poor, they are winless in five, with just two points in that time ,however, they have won each of their Carabao Cup games in that time, a 1-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon and, most recently, a 2-0 win over Chelsea putting them in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal have had similar issues with no win in either of their last two league games, but between those was a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, and a 3-0 win over Preston in the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle v Arsenal – Prediction

The last meeting between these teams finished 4-1 to the Gunners, however, that hasn’t been representative of what normally occurs in these games. The six prior meetings saw no more than two goals scored and in each, they all went in one direction, with the winner always registering a clean sheet.

Newcastle’s recent issues in front of goal, and their over-reliance on Isak has been brought to light, whilst similar questions have been asked of Arsenal when they have been without Odegaard and Bukayo Saka.

The hosts have already held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw this season, but relied on a penalty to get their equaliser, whilst they haven’t conceded more than one goal in any home game this campaign. As a result, we’re expecting a cagey affair that Arsenal will edge.
