The Premier League broadcasters are trolling people opposed to the 3pm blackouts on Saturdays.
For the second time in six match weeks, both Liverpool and Manchester City are kicking off in the same time slot, which means people in the UK can’t watch them on TV. This hadn’t happened for over two years before that.
It can’t be a conspiracy, or else it’d obviously be affecting Arsenal. But as well as the Premier League’s top two being in action, we have two huge clashes at the wrong end of the table. Here’s an accumulator with a pick from the five matches at 3pm on Saturday this weekend.
Bournemouth v Manchester City
Manchester City to win and both teams to score, yes
We begin at the Vitality Stadium, where Bournemouth host Manchester City, a team which has won the last 15 meetings. The Cherries have never beaten the Cityzens, last claiming a point in what is now League One in 1999.
Their performances this season suggest Bournemouth have a better chance of a positive result than Paddy Power’s odds suggest. Being underrated and taking points off City are very different things, though.
So, we’ll stick with the favourite and take both teams to score. It occurred in seven straight City games before last weekend, and Bournemouth have much more about them than Southampton.
Ipswich v Leicester
Both teams to score, yes
We’re off to East Anglia next for a clash between two newly promoted sides. Both meetings of Ipswich and Leicester ended 1-1 last season, with no Premier League team having drawn more matches than the Tractor Boys in 2024/25.
Steve Cooper’s men are the masters of scoring and conceding this season. Only their 1-0 win over Bournemouth saw a clean sheet for either side. With Ipswich scoring three times last weekend (let’s brush over the four they conceded), their attacking players will have received a confidence boost.
And having seen both teams score in four of their five games against teams who start the weekend ninth or lower in the table, it’s fair to expect that outcome once against when Kieran McKenna’s side are playing Leicester.
Liverpool v Brighton
Both teams to score, yes
At Anfield, we have a repeat of a Carabao Cup tie from Wednesday, albeit on the south coast, so this must be the second leg. After a goalless first half, madness was unleashed at the Amex after the break, with Liverpool beating Brighton 3-2 to advance to the quarter-finals.
While the Seagulls lost this fixture 2-1 last season, they led in that match and had collected a win and two draws from their preceding three visits to face the Reds. There won’t be many teams who did so well against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on their patch.
As we saw in midweek, this match-up usually brings goals. Both teams found the net in the last four meetings and five of the last six. It’s a running theme this week, but this is another game in which we should take both teams to score.
Nottingham Forest v West Ham
Under 2.5 goals
The one game with mainly mid-table implications sees Nottingham Forest welcome West Ham to the City Ground.
They haven’t been welcoming hosts lately, though, with Forest winning both meetings to nil since they were promoted in 2022. Most pertinently to what I’m about to suggest, the games ended 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.
The underlying data is screaming for a bet on under 2.5 goals in this game. But so are Forest, who have seen at least three goals in just two of their nine league matches in 2024/25, none from four at home. This game will be so low-scoring that it won’t just be last on Match of the Day; they might not even bother showing it.
Southampton v Everton
Everton to win
We finish at Southampton, where Everton are the visitors. The sight of the division’s rock-bottom side trying to play football will bring Sean Dyche out in a cold sweat. But simultaneously, the Blues’ boss will be confident of making the most of Saints’ woke nonsense.
Everton have also had a week to prepare for this game, unlike their hosts, who beat Stoke 3-2 in the League Cup on Tuesday. Dyche will have them amped up, ready to claim three points.
Backing the Blues to win any match is a risk. But last season, they won three and drew two away games against the sides that finished below them, as Southampton surely will. Let’s be bold and possibly mad to finish: Everton to win.
