Dejan Kulusevski to commit 2 or more fouls

With a place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals at stake, Tottenham welcome Man City in a clash that promises entertainment. A backdrop of Ange being under pressure at Spurs coupled with a City side who seem to have lost at least some of their air of invincibility means that a fixture which has averaged 3.5 goals across it’s last six iterations should have some added spice to it.

Pep Guardiola’s super successful tactical approach of boring the opposition into submission has long been a nightmare for prop bettors. Such is City’s dominance whoever they play that their games usually see a lack of any form of engagement from their opponents. Thankfully, Ange Postecoglou has seen that trend and decided it’s not for him and as such, the head-to-head data suggests that we can get stuck into the foul markets for this match-up.

Let’s address the elephant in the room first – Man City games usually have ridiculously low foul counts. They make 6.67 fouls per game in the Premier League this season and draw just 10.1. Their average of 16.77 fouls in total per match is less than every side other than Brentford and is a continuation of last season where their games saw the least. Thankfully, Spurs games are much more exciting as they’re the second most fouled team in the division and their games are seeing an average of 25 fouls. This contrast in styles led to foul counts of 29, 34 and 32 across the 3 games between these sides last season and so we’ll lean into that data and hope to capitalise on a few players combined for fouls in our Bet Builder.

Mateo Kovacic to commit 2 or more fouls

Mateo Kovacic has been given the role of chief disruptor since Ballon D’or winner Rodri tore his ACL. The Spaniard was responsible for breaking up any opposition counter attacks and in the aforementioned head-to-heads between these sides last season, he committed two, four and two fouls and so we can expect Kovacic to be busy. The Croatian committed three fouls of his own across two of those fixtures and was booked in both and with him opposing James Maddison who has been fouled 3.12 times per 90 minutes this season, he looks a good price to make at least two infringements.

Bernardo Silva to commit 2 or more fouls

Our second City player is Bernardo Silva who has landed 2 or more fouls in all three of his last appearances against Spurs, with five coming in his last two trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He’s averaged 0.87 fouls per 90 in the Premier League this season and has only blanked in three of those nine games, two of which he was booked in. Like Kovacic, he’ll be involved in a congested midfield with Maddison and Kulusevski to deal with and could well be drawn in to late challenges.

Cristian Romero to commit 2 or more fouls

We’re also relying on some Spurs fouls and if there’s one man from their side you’d hang your hat on for fouls, it’s hot-head Cristian Romero. The Argentine has been at the centre of a battle with Erling Haaland in recent head-to-heads and that is a matchup which has seen him commit eight fouls in four games, being booked twice and sent off in another. Quite simply, his approach to handling Haaland is to kick him and we can expect no different here.

Dejan Kulusevski to commit 2 or more fouls

Our final selection is for Dejan Kulusevski to commit two or more fouls and is very much down to a recent positional change. For Spurs’ last six games, the Ginger from Sweden has been moved off the wing into a more central role which has seen him having to deal with more congested play and a lot less time on the ball. This has seen him commit 12 fouls, landing two or more in four of those including 4 against Palace at the weekend. Like all of our selections, he’s also got previous in this fixture from last season where he made four fouls across the three games and was booked at The Etihad.

With the head-to-head data pointing clearly towards plenty of fouls in a game with lots at stake for both sides, settle in for some Wednesday night entertainment and get ready to cheer on some mistimed challenges.
