Eintracht Frankfurt v Borussia Monchengladbach – Frankfurt to win & both teams to score
DFB Pokal match at Deutsche Bank Park, Frankfurt
TV: DFB Play, 5pm
Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-0 when these two teams met in the Bundesliga earlier in the season, but the chances of a repeat result on Wednesday are slim.
That victory was Frankfurt’s only domestic clean sheet this season. They are currently conceding 1.5 goals per game in the league, and they also conceded to lowly Eintracht Braunchsweig in the previous round of the cup.
It also marked the only time that Monchengladbach have failed to score in the league this season. ‘Gladbach should at least find the back of the net on this journey to Frankfurt, but they are still likely to leave empty-handed.
The hosts are undefeated in six home games in all competitions this season, winning four of them, while the away side have won just one of their four away league outings so far this season, including none of their last three.
All signs point to a Frankfurt victory, but they may need to score at least twice to secure it.
Celtic v Dundee United – Over 3.5 goals
Premiership match at Celtic Park
7:45pm
Celtic have made an almost flawless start to their Scottish league season, winning eight games and scoring 27 goals in their opening nine games. The fact that they have picked up four points in their first three Champions League games is an added bonus.
Brendan Rodgers’ side dropped their only points of the league season in their previous home outing, surrendering a two-goal lead against Aberdeen in a top-of-the-table clash 10 days ago, but they have posted a number of impressive home victories, including a 3-0 win over Rangers in the league and a 5-1 win against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League.
Dundee United, on the other hand, have had a patchy start to the season, with four wins, three draws, and two defeats after nine games.
They’ve conceded six in their last three away outings in all competitions, which doesn’t bode well for a trip to a free-scoring Celtic side that has scored four goals or more on four separate occasions already this season.
There is a small chance that the away side, who have scored seven in their last four games, will score one of their own at the other end, although Celtic’s defensive record of three goals conceded in nine games suggests otherwise.
A convincing home win is by far the likeliest outcome on Wednesday night, but there should be plenty of goals regardless.
Mainz v Bayern Munich – Over 4.5 goals
DFP Pokal match at the MEWA Arena, Mainz
TV: DFB Play, 7:45pm
Whether they concede or score them, goals have been a hallmark of Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich at this early stage of his tenure. Kompany has overseen 13 competitive games as Bayern manager so far, and his side has scored a hugely impressive 43 goals while conceding a somewhat concerning 14 goals.
FC Hollywood are scoring well over three goals per game so far this season and conceding just over a goal per game for a combined total of over four goals per game.
Five of their eight Bundesliga games have seen five goals or more, while two of their three Champions League games have reached at least five goals, while a further two games have fallen just short of the five-goal mark.
Even when Bayern are hammering their opponents into oblivion, they are liable to concede at the other end – take their 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb or their 6-1 win over Holstein Kiel as examples.
Mainz are scoring and conceding at a rate of roughly 1.5 goals per game and are almost certainly going to concede multiple times on Wednesday night. They may just be able to hurt their opponents at the other end, though.
Aberdeen v Rangers – Both teams to score, yes
Premiership match at Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen
TV: Sky Sports Football, 8pm
Aberdeen have opened up a six-point lead over third-placed Rangers and can count themselves unlucky not to be top of the table with a 100% winning record after an excellent second-half display at Celtic Park recently.
Like Celtic, Aberdeen have won eight and drawn one of their first nine league games, albeit far less convincingly than the three-in-a-row defending champions.
All but two of their league wins this season have been decided by a one-goal margin, while both teams have found the back of the net in six of their nine fixtures this season.
Rangers, meanwhile, have found goals hard to come by, with six of their 14 league goals coming in a rout against Ross County. However, they can take heart from a 4-0 win over FCSB in the Europa League last week and certainly possess the tools to hurt a relatively fragile Aberdeen defence.
The Dons will fancy their chances at the other end, considering they are currently averaging two goals per game and have scored in every game this season.
