The Carabao Cup returns on Tuesday night, with Southampton hosting Stoke and Brentford taking on Sheffield Wednesday.
Does that mean we’re lumping on the Premier League hosts? Not quite. Football tipster Paddy Murphy is on hand to find where the value is in the markets, so let’s get into it.

Southampton v Stoke
Carabao Cup match at St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton
TV: Sky Sports+, 7:45pm
Both teams to score? No
Languishing at the foot of the Premier League table, a place in the quarter-finals for Southampton might lift some of the gloom that has descended upon St Mary’s over recent weeks.
The hosts have played 11 games this season and have won just one, a 3-5 win over Cardiff in the same competition. They’ve only drawn two games this season, too. One was a 1-1 at home to Ipswich, and the other was a 1-1 away to Everton in the previous round of the Carabao Cup, but they went on to win the penalty shootout.
Stoke are 19th in the Championship, and while a cup run would also give Potters’ fans something to cheer about, their away form would suggest they’re unlikely to get even a sniff here. Of their last five away games, they’ve won one, drawn one, and lost three, scoring a total of one goal, and conceding five.
The Saints have scored at least five goals over their last five fixtures and three in their last two at home. We can only see one team scoring here.
Southampton to win
Building on the logic of the above, Southampton will surely be outsourcing Stoke here.
The hosts have a relegation six-pointer at home to Everton on Saturday looming large and a win here would put them in good stead for that so you’d have to expect that Russell Martin will be rallying the troops for a win.
Stoke will be thinking the same, but they’ve got three very tough fixtures coming up against Derby, Blackburn, and Millwall on the horizon. With home advantage, the Premier League side should have more than enough against a team that seems to constantly lose its shooting boots when they hit the road.
Brentford v Sheffield Wednesday
Carabao Cup match at the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford
TV: Sky Sports Main Event/Football, 8pm
Both teams to score? Yes
Brentford are box office this season. There have been 24 goals over their last five fixtures and 25 over their last five at the Gtech. The Bees have played 11 games this season, and Both Teams to Score has landed in nine of them; Brentford scored in 10 of them, or, in other words, they’ve only kept one clean sheet all season.
In their six home games this term, they’ve failed to keep any of their opponents scoreless. Leyton Orient, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham all scored one, Wolves and Ipswich scored three apiece.
Sheffield Wednesday are doing quite a bit better than last season, particularly on the road, where they’ve only lost three fixtures from nine. They’ve scored six over their last five away games, coupled with Brentford’s absolute lack of desire for clean sheets, so we’d be barking not to back both teams to get on the scoresheet.
Brentford (-1)
For all that, we reckon Wednesday will bring some joy at the Gtech; the Bees are in immense form in front of the goal. They’ve scored 12 over their last five matches and 16 over their last five at home. Brian Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa have been paramount to their good form, and while both probably won’t be in the starting XI here, the home side’s form cannot really be argued with, and they should certainly be winning by two clear goals here.
