7.45pm: Southampton v Stoke City – Southampton to win
TV: Sky Sports+
Exiting the League Cup at an early stage is often the best course of action for sides involved in a Premier League relegation battle. But, not so for Southampton at present.
The Saints have recorded the joint-worst start in Premier League history, at the nine-game mark, picking up just a single point from a possible 27.
The question, is not whether they are going to be relegated. It’s whether they are capable of breaking the long-standing record set by Derby County for the lowest points in league history (11).
Any sort of win, therefore, is important to morale at St. Mary’s, and a home encounter with a Stoke side that has also endured a difficult start to their league season, provides Russell Martin’s side with a big opportunity.
Stoke are 19th, just a point off the Championship relegation zone and without a win in four games. They have lost half of their 12 league matches this season and represent ideal opponents for out-of-form Southampton.
7:45pm: Stevenage v Bolton – Bolton to win
TV: Sky Sports+
Bolton’s bid to return to the Championship for the first time since 2019 has got off to a modest start, with Ian Evatt’s side currently ninth after 12 games, but with the potential of ending Tuesday night in the playoff places if results go their way.
They face a Stevenage team that has lost two games on the trot, without scoring a goal in three of their last four games in all competitions, albeit they did record an impressive win at promotion-chasing Mansfield two weeks ago.
Bolton, on the other hand, have strung together an impressive run of five wins in seven league games, with their only loss in that period coming at high-flying Birmingham City.
They are finding goals easy to come by at present, scoring 16 goals in that seven-game spell.
Opponents Stevenage currently boast the worst attacking record in the league, scoring just nine goals in their opening 13 games, and they have scored just four goals in their last eight games.
They have scored more than once in a single game on just one occasion this season, and it’s difficult to see them finding a way back into the game, if Bolton take the lead on Tuesday.
7:45pm: Stockport v Reading – Draw
TV: Sky Sports+
Reading have responded impressively to a 5-2 defeat at Bolton last month by winning five of their next six games to jump into the top six at this early stage of the season.
However, that run of form has been aided by a large number of home games, with four of those five wins coming at the Madejski Stadium.
In general, their away form has been lamentable, with just one win from five games on the road.
Newly promoted Stockport, have made a decent start to life in League One, currently mid-table and four points off the play-offs.
However, they are drawing too many games.
Stockport have drawn half of their 12 league games this season, without a home win since August, drawing two and losing two of their last four home outings.
Their home record is almost as bad as Reading’s away run and there’s every chance the two sides cancel each other out on Tuesday.
7:45pm: Fleetwood v Salford – Draw
TV: Sky Sports+
Fleetwood and Salford have both drawn their fair share of games in League Two this season, with Fleetwood drawing five of their opening 12 games and Salford drawing four of 13.
Both sides have posted almost identical starts to the league season, and are currently separated by just two points, with Fleetwood capable of leapfrogging Salford with victory on Tuesday night.
However, the signs do not suggest a Fleetwood victory.
Fleetwood are without a home league win since August 10, and have drawn three and lost one of their last four home games, in League Two.
Salford have improved after an underwhelming start, taking ten points from their last four games, and are more than capable of coming away with a point.
