Arsenal Over 2.5 cards
A feisty encounter should be forecast between Arsenal and Liverpool on Sunday if the matches between the clubs last season were anything to go by.
Much has been made of the Gunners’ need to pick up fewer clubs, but that might need to be put to one side until next week, with Mikel Arteta likely to want to see managed aggression from his side in this game.
This is, however, likely to spill over and lead to cards, as was the case against Manchester City, when they picked up six. Last term, they picked up 11 cards against Liverpool, including six at home.
Referee Anthony Taylor is not shy about dishing out cards, either. He has shown 52 across ten games this season at an average of 5.2 per game. Arsenal have been warned.
Arsenal to commit 10 or more fouls
Arsenal have constantly produced a high foul count in the Premier League this season, with not a single game in the top-flight going by this season without Mikel Arteta’s men hitting double figures in this metric. Across the last five fixtures, they have held steady at ten or 11 fouls per match.
Liverpool are not typically a team that draws a high foul count, but with the Reds fouled on 11 or more occasions in three of their last four Premier League outings, there are signs that this is slowly changing.
Kai Havertz to commit 2 or more fouls
No Arsenal player commits more fouls than Kai Havertz, who has made 15 in the Premier League this season, remarkably without picking up a single card.
The Germany international is making 1.88 fouls per 90 in England’s top flight this season and committed at least one foul in every match he has played for club and country this season.
It is notable that he also tends to pick up more fouls in the tougher games: four against Aston Villa, three against Atalanta and PSG in the Champions League and two against Manchester City – even a trio versus Bournemouth in last weekend’s frustrating loss.
Remarkably, he has committed at least two fouls in five of his last six matches against the Anfield club, whether playing for Arsenal or Chelsea.
Mohamed Salah to have 1 or more shots on target
Mo Salah missed Liverpool’s 3-1 Emirates defeat in February because of injury, but he will make the trip on Sunday as the visitors’ outstanding threat.
The Egypt international star only played against the Gunners once last term but managed to score on that occasion while he also had two shots on target.
This time around, he comes into the game in the curious situation of having failed to muster a shot on target in his last match. Previously this season for Liverpool, he had at least one in every game, including the opening goal against Chelsea at Anfield last week. Expect normal service to be resumed here.
Ibrahim Konate to commit 2 or more fouls
Konate sits with an unremarkable foul count of eight in the Premier League this season, putting him joint fourth among his Liverpool teammates in this regard. He has at least one foul in nine of his last 11 for club and country.
Where the France centre-back starts to look valuable, however, is in his previous matchups with Arsenal. Last season, he committed three fouls in both of his outings against the Emirates side in the Premier League. His last outing ended in a red card after he was booked twice.
With this game likely to see him tussle with Kai Havertz, expect the defender to be drawn into foul trouble again.
