Burnley v QPR: Burnley to win
Second place in the Championship Burnley hosts second-bottom QPR at Turf Moor. Despite relegation from the Premier League, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany was approached by 32-time German champions Bayern Munich.
Scott Parker, who has twice been promoted from the Championship, is now the man in the Turf Moor dugout. The Clarets have lost just once this season, coming in a 1-0 defeat at top-of-the-table Sunderland.
Parker’s side are defensively resolute, conceding just five times this season – the fewest in the league. QPR looked dead and buried last season until Marti Cifuentes came in and turned their fortunes around.
The Loftus Road faithful were filled with optimism heading into this campaign, but their side have been lacklustre thus far. The Hoops have won just one game this season, coming in a 2-1 win at Kenilworth Road against Luton.
Only bottom club Portsmouth have conceded more goals than QPR, with only Swansea and Plymouth scoring fewer. It could be a long afternoon for the lowly West Londoners who will struggle to get a result at Turf Moor.
Bolton v Peterborough: BTTS & over 2.5 goals
After losing in the playoff final to Oxford United, Bolton have started this season slowly sat in 14th. A 2-0 loss at Birmingham thwarted a five-game unbeaten run for the Trotters, with Ian Evatt’s side failing to land a glove on the Blues.
In 11 games they’ve scored 17 goals and conceded 18, with their games averaging 3.18 goals. Of their six home games, four have seen over 2.5 goals.
Peterborough have had a mixed week, losing 3-1 to Wycombe before dismantling Blackpool 5-1. Darren Ferguson’s side are now 12th one point off the playoffs.
Posh have scored 25 goals and conceded 25, with their games averaging 3.85 goals. Of their 13 games, 10 have seen over 2.5 goals – including all six away games.
Both teams will be chasing a statement win on their march for the playoffs, so an entertaining clash is in store.
Charlton v Wrexham: Under 2.5 goals
Charlton and Wrexham are two promotion-chasing sides in League One and the pair meet at the Valley on Saturday. Under the guise of Nathan Jones, The Addicks have been steady yet unspectacular and are in 11th place.
The Welshman has come in for some criticism for his pragmatic style of play, with his side scoring just 13 goals. On the flip side, they’ve only conceded 12 goals with their games averaging 2.08 goals.
Of Charlton’s six home games, five have seen under 2.5 goals – the most in the league. At the Valley, there has only 11 goals in six games, with Charlton conceding just four times.
There is a stark contrast in Wrexham’s style of play at home compared to away. Five of their six home games have seen at least three goals, while away from home only one of their six games have seen over 2.5 goals.
Phil Parkinson likes to keep it tight on the road, with The Red Dragons away games seeing just eight goals for an average of 1.33 per game. Both teams will look to keep it tight in what should be a cagey game.
Wycombe v Leyton Orient: Wycombe & over 1.5 goals
Wycombe are becoming a regular staple in my columns and for good reason. Matt Bloomfield’s side have been entertaining this season, scoring at least two goals in all bar one game.
Only Peterborough (25 goals) have scored more goals than the Choirboys’ 23, with Wycombe boasting a potent front line. Leyton Orient halted a run of five games without a win and three straight losses after scraping past Rotherham 1-0 at Brisbane Road.
Richie Wellens’ side are still precariously close to the drop zone, sitting just one point clear of Crawley. The O’s have picked up just six points on their travels and face a tough test at free-scoring Wycombe.
Newport County v Fleetwood: Newport win/draw
Newport County were expected to be battling relegation this season, especially after selling last season’s top scorer Will Evans to League One side Mansfield. Instead, Nelson Jardim has his side in 13th, ten points clear of safety and just three points off the playoffs.
The Exiles recently defeated Gillingham 2-0 away to halt a run of three straight losses. Jardim will be delighted to be back at Rodney Parade, a ground they have taken 12 points from six games at.
Fleetwood come into this game after a 0-1 home loss to Crewe, a few days after a 3-1 loss to Port Vale. Charlie Adam’s side have won three of their six away games but face a tough challenge in South Wales.
County sit one place and two points ahead of the Cod Army, so the value lies with the hosts.
