Barcelona versus Bayern Munich has given us some thrilling encounters down the years, with that crazy 8-2 Champions League quarter-final win for Bayern back in 2020 the standout moment.
That victory was the year the Bavarians added to their Champions League trophy haul, winning the tournament for a sixth time, and it was overseen by none other than Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s new boss.
Times have changed since then, however, and this will be the first meeting in recent history where neither side is the domestic champion of their respective countries. Both are sitting top of their leagues now, though, so no doubt both clubs will see it as normal service resumed.
This should be an enthralling encounter, with both teams set up to play on the front foot in similar systems and with similar types of players.
There will be an interesting battle between wingers in this game, albeit an indirect one. Lamine Yamal and Michael Olise will compete to be the star of the show, having both impressed on the right wing of their side’s midfield this campaign.
Yamal’s impressive form for Spain during Euro 2024 has continued for his club with 10 goal contributions in 10 league games, while Olise has been a revelation since arriving from Crystal Palace in the summer, contributing to nine goals in 10 games.
Both teams possess veteran centre forwards in the form of Robert Lewandowski (formerly of Bayern Munich, of course) and Harry Kane, with neither showing signs of slowing down. Both have averaged over a goal a game, with each having netted 13 times already this season in all competitions.
The midfield battle will perhaps be a deciding factor in this match. Bayern are missing a couple of key players, but Kompany’s squad has enough depth to cover for that. The absence of some younger players might require Bayern to lean on experience to navigate this game.
Barca’s youthful energy through the likes of Yamal, Pedri and Marc Casado, none of whom are older than 21, could face off against the likes of Joshua Kimmich (29), Joao Palhinha (29), and Thomas Müller (35).
Lastly, defences haven’t been on top for either team this season, with Bayern registering just one clean sheet on the road in the league and Europe, including conceding three in their last away game at Frankfurt. Barca’s defensive record has improved of late with three clean sheets in their last five, after registering just one in their opening seven, but the likes of Getafe, Young Boys and Deportivo Alaves don’t possess the offensive qualities of the Bayern side they are about to face.
That should set this up nicely for plenty of goals.
Barcelona Team News
Barcelona have no fresh injury concerns but will still be without Ronald Araújo, Marc-André ter Stegen, Ferran Torres and Andreas Christensen for this game.
Bayern Munich Team News
Bayern were dealt a huge blow at the weekend as Aleksandar Pavlović had to be subbed off early with a broken collarbone that will see him out until December. Jamal Musiala remains a doubt, having not featured since Bayern’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in their last Champions League game. Longer-term absentees Josip Stanisic and Sacha Boey remain out.
Form Guide
Barcelona’s start to life under new manager Hansi Flick has been a good one with the Blaugrana sitting at the top of La Liga 10 games in. Flick’s men have won their last three, scoring 13 goals in the process, however, they did suffer their only league defeat so far just before that, going down 4-2 to Osasuna.
Barca’s only other defeat this year came in this competition when they lost 2-1 to Monaco in France on the opening matchday.
Bayern Munich had also made a pretty good start to life under their new manager, Vincent Kompany, although a tough run of games lately has been testing. The German giants dispatched of Stuttgart comfortably last time out with a 4-0 win to end their three-game streak without a win. That run started with a 1-1 draw at home to champions Bayer Leverkusen and was followed by a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa and a 3-3 draw with Frankfurt.
Barcelona v Bayern Munich – Prediction
This promises to be one of the most exciting match-ups in the third game week of the Champions League. Both Barcelona and Bayern Munich are renowned for wanting to attack and control games and in meetings between the sides down the years, there have always been plenty of goals.
Unsurprisingly, both of these teams have scored the most goals in their respective domestic leagues whilst neither boasts the best defensive record, further highlighting that commitment to attack.
There are so many similarities between the teams’ set-up and the players’ profiles at their disposal that it is hard to separate them. As a result, we’re forecasting an entertaining score draw.
Our prediction, Barcelona 2-2 Bayern Munich.
