Under 2.5 goals

Ecuador v Paraguay gets us rolling on crunch night of CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying with the hosts currently fourth in the table.

The September window saw the Ecuadorians lose 1-0 in Brazil and pick up a crucial 1-0 victory at home to Peru. Paraguay’s double header last month was similarly uninspiring, with a 0-0 draw in Uruguay, and a 1-0 shock win over Brazil.

Calling a result in this one is tricky, but it looks certain to be very tight, with those combined four games from September all featuring under 2.5 goals scored at the final whistle.

10:00pm: Venezuela v Argentina

Both teams to score: Yes

Argentina are strong favourites to win here and extend their lead at the top of the CONMEBOL rankings. However, there is little value in a straight result pick, and Argentina’s leaky defence is eye-catching.

They conceded two goals in September’s 2-1 loss to Colombia, and Lisandro Martinez comes into this game on the back of being dropped by Manchester United, for their weekend draw at Aston Villa.

Venezuela will find it difficult to qualify in the final shake up, but they are a tough nut to crack at home, and have scored in half of their home qualifiers so far in 2024.

Lionel Messi to score

Main man Messi is back for Argentina, after missing the September window due to his Copa America final injury, and he is on fire for Inter Miami, with five goals in his last four club starts.

He will be on free kick and penalty duty again and the ‘GOAT’ will be looking to fire Argentina closer to their goal of defending a world title in 2026.

01:00am: Chile v Brazil

WHERE: Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, Santiago
TV: None

Brazil to win and under 2.5 goals scored

The story of Brazil’s qualification campaign so far is along the lines of a South American soap opera as the Samba Boys sit fifth in the rankings with work to do in the coming months.

A host of injury issues has further complicated matters this month, with Real Madrid duo Eder Militao and Vinicius Junior out, alongside Liverpool goal keeper Alisson.

A win and a defeat in September continued the pattern of inconsistency, and they need a victory in Santiago, against a Chile side which failed to win a game at the Copa America and lost twice last month.

Brazil’s last four games featured under 2.5 goals scored overall and even a scrappy victory will suffice as they look to get qualification on track before the end of 2024.
