Lee Carsley’s England side return to international action on Thursday night as the Three Lions host Greece in the Nations League.

Thank goodness the Nations League is here to save us from a Premier League season which had started to get going nicely, right guys? Right? Hello?
One happy man is Lee Carsley. The interim England manager guided his side to a pair of 2-0 wins in his first international break, with games against Greece and Finland this week offering a good chance for another two victories. He might get the job if he’s not careful.
A clash with the Greeks will stir memories of 2001, when David Beckham took it on himself to do literally everything and finally scored a late equaliser with his 43rd free-kick attempt of the game. This should be a smoother ride for the Three Lions of 2024 and here’s a Bet Builder of five selections.
England -1 & Both teams to score – no
These teams have only met once since that famous match, with England strolling to a 4-0 first half lead in a friendly in 2006. This may not be quite so comfortable, but a home win is very much on the cards.
Greece have made a decent start to 2024/25, beating Finland and Republic of Ireland without conceding. However, it’s important to note that three of their four defeats last season occurred against Netherlands and Germany.
They will be facing a team of similar standard in England, who have won their last four competitive games at Wembley at the cost of just one goal conceded. Of the seven such matches they failed to win under Gareth Southgate, none came against a side as low as 48th in the FIFA rankings, Greece’s current standing.
Most notably, the aggregate score from the previous manager’s 11 Wembley competitive fixtures against sides outside the top 47 in the world was 37-0, with only Slovenia holding England to fewer than two goals.
With that history and two 2-0 victories already this season, England should be comfortable enough on Thursday evening. Back them to overcome the Alternative Handicap of -1 and just say ‘no’ in the Both Teams to Score market.
Cole Palmer to score
When it comes to a goal scorer bet in an England match, only a fool would dissuade you from backing Harry Kane. The Bayern Munich man has scored in England’s last six matches at Wembley, amassing a total of 10 goals in those games.
I won’t tell you to ignore Kane but there are always some better value options in matches the Three Lions expect to win.
Carsley selected Anthony Gordon, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka in his starting XI for his first two matches, though only the Manchester City man got on the score sheet. The temporary England boss must pick Cole Palmer with the form he is in, though.
After all, the Chelsea man was named in the squad for the last international break but had to miss out through injury. He is the top scoring English player in Europe’s big five leagues this season, while only Saka has more assists.
Palmer scored the last time he appeared for England, in the small matter of the final of Euro 2024. He simply has to start here and should be an Anytime Goalscorer.
Over 6.5 England corners
International football doesn’t normally see many corners. England’s games are no exception, but you can rely on them to rack up a few at Wembley.
Greece should contribute to this too. Since the start of last season, they have conceded 13 corners to Germany, nine against France and eight to Netherlands.
The Three Lions usually fall a little short of that. However, a bet on Over 6.5 in the Home Total Corners market has been successful in six of their last 10 matches at the national stadium, with three of the four games which didn’t meet that mark still seeing six. England should tally Over 6.5 Corners against Greece.
Kostas Tsimikas to commit 2 or more fouls
Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas will be busy here. He should be up against Saka, who has been in the top 10 most fouled Premier League players in each of the last four seasons. He was also joint-second for this stat at Euro 2024.
He will pose a serious test to the Greek defender when he gets on the ball. In the last year or so, Tsimikas has been penalised for at least two free-kicks against the likes of Luton Town, Union SG, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar and Republic of Ireland twice.
With that record, it seems inevitable that Tsimikas will Commit 2 or More Fouls against England.
