Michael Antonio and Cody Gakpo - Liverpool v West Ham

Round three of the Carabao Cup concludes with Julen Lopetegui’s Hammers heading to Merseyside to challenge Arne Slot’s Reds at Anfield.

Footy tipster Andrew Cunneen forecasts one-way traffic in Wednesday’s late kick-off and has four picks for his Bet Builder. Let’s get into his Liverpool v West Ham betting tips.

Cody Gakpo to score
Dominic Szoboszlai to have 1+ shots on target
Curtis Jones to have 1+ shots on target
Jarell Quansah to have 1+ shots on target

WHEN: Sunday, September 15th, 16.30

Cody Gakpo to score

I love Dutch managers. That’s not a weird fetish; it’s more of an ode to their desire for trophies than philosophical victories.

Maybe that’s wise when you consider this is a nation whose entire idea of football is based around Cruyff (Johan, not Jordi), but the exports from the Netherlands into the Premier League have always prioritised winning silverware.‌

Arne Slot will want to win the Carabao Cup. We’ve seen weird victory laps at Man United through Louis van Gaal and Erik Ten Hag winning cup finals despite clearly being in crisis. Slot has never really dropped intensity in games that might typically be seen as second-rate.

In saying that, he has the luxury of switching this around here: Mo Salah won’t start, and Diogo Jota is overdue a rest. That likely means a front three of Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo.

Chiesa won’t play 90 minutes and Nunez is a toss-up as to whether or not he’s on a going day, so I’ll side with Gakpo to test Lukasz Fabianski.

Dominic Szoboszlai to have 1+ shots on target

I’ll pair him up with Curtis Jones, who will undoubtedly be the more forward-thinking of the three central midfielders, but having Wataru Endo in the team will at least allow him to step up when there’s possession in a wide area.‌

He’s got one of the most powerful strikes in the Premier League, and despite him being more of an enforcer than a highlight reel type, a team that will probably see Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas replace the productivity of Trent Alexander-Arnold means he’ll have to chip in.

You can be pretty sure he’ll start, too, as I don’t expect Tyler Morton to be atop Arne Slot’s plans for midweek congestion.

Curtis Jones to have 1+ shots on target

The energy and the X Factor in this game – if Liverpool start slow, Jones will inject pace. He’s probably the only central player likely to shoot after a dribble, too. That alone is worth a punt in a League Cup game because players will undoubtedly be freer to express themselves.

He’s probably not getting as much gametime as he deserves, and these opportunities are the ones he needs to take to get the nod in a weekend fixture.

We’re also factoring in that Liverpool have had 35 shots on target through five Premier League games this year—that’s seven on average per game. Having multiple players land shots on target, particularly as the shackles are off somewhat, is a smart play.

Jarell Quansah to have 1+ shots on target

Likely partnering Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah has shown his quality from set pieces when he’s been given the chance and seeing him involved in the box won’t be a shock to anyone familiar with the threat that a six-foot-three powerhouse poses at Anfield.

He netted twice in just seventeen Premier League appearances last year and bagged another in the Europa League. If it’s a toss-up between the primary target from corners between he and Joe Gomez, it’s only going one way.
