Lyon welcome high-flying Marseille to the Groupama, we’ve also got the Milan derby. There’s a Madrid derby too, in Rayo Vallecano v Atletico Madrid and, finally, in Portugal, Sporting host AVS.
Our football tipster, Paddy Murphy, loves a bit of continental football, and he’s got four value picks from the best of the fixtures on offer.

Lyon v Marseille – Marseille to win & both teams to score
Ligue Un match at the Groupama Stadium, Lyon
TV: Ligue Un Pass
Life in Marseille certainly seems to suit Roberto De Zerbi. The former Brighton and Shakhtar Donetsk coach is yet to taste defeat in his competitive games for the Les Phoceens. They’ve won three and drawn one under his steerage and have been clinical in front of goal, scoring 12 goals over those four games. However, they’ve also conceded four.
Things aren’t so rosy at Lyon. The hosts have won just one of their four games so far, drawing one and losing two, scoring four goals while conceding eight.
Over recent seasons, the home side have won three of the last five meetings at the Groupama, drawing one and losing one. However, low on confidence and facing a Marseille team who are flying under De Zerbi, we have to side with the away team.
Saying that, Lyon have a good historical record at home to them and Marseille are conceding plenty, so we except the hosts to at least get one on the scoreboard.
Inter v AC Milan – Over 1.5 Inter goals
Serie A match at the San Siro, Milan
TV: TNT Sports
Was Inter’s 0-0 Champions League draw away to Manchester City a tactical joy to watch, or a drab 0-0? Maybe saying the former is a way of not admitting the latter and so you don’t have to admit to wasting your Wednesday evening. Psychology aside, both teams could have won it, so a draw was a fair result in the end.
Inter are certainly the favourites here. As the home team, they have beaten the Rossoneri in four of their last five meetings. The hosts have won two and drawn two of their four games this season, of their two home games, they won them by scorelines of 2-0 and 4-0.
Can we make an argument for a Milan win? Not really. Of their five games this season, they’ve only won one and that was a 4-0 thrashing of Venezia. They’ve lost to Parma, drawn with Torino and Lazio and, of course, lost 1-3 at home to Liverpool midweek as well. They’ve certainly got a good squad but it’s not coming together yet and Inter should be winning here.
We’re going with the host to score at least two here. The reasoning being that Milan have conceded at least two in four of their five games this season and the home side have scored at least a brace in eight of their last 10 home Serie A games.
Rayo Vallecano v Atletico Madrid – Atletico Madrid to win
La Liga match at the Estadio de Vallecas, Madrid
TV: Premier Sports, LaLiga TV
Diego Simeone’s Atletico are yet to taste defeat this season. Of their six games thus far, they’ve won four and drawn two. Their Achilles heel last season was their away from. However, it should be noted that they did finish the season strongly on the road, and of their last five away La Liga games, they’ve won four and drawn one.
Rayo have won two, drawn one, and lost two in La Liga this campaign, while at home have won one and lost one.
Atletico have won all five of their most recent visits here in the league, scoring seven here last season. Indeed, they’ve scored 13 over their last five visits and conceded just one. The black-suited Simeone should see his side bagging the spoiles here.
Sporting v AVS – Sporting to win to nil
Primeira Liga match at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon
TV: TrillerTV+
To Portugal, where Sporting host newly-promoted AVS. The hosts are enjoying a great run of form. Since losing to Porto in the season-opening Super Cup, they’ve won all six of their fixtures, scoring a healthy 21 goals, conceding just two.
AVS have done quite well since joining the top tier, winning two, drawing one and losing two but both of their away games have ended in defeat. They scored in both of them but Sporting’s record of four clean sheets over their last five fixtures, and four clean sheets over their last five home league games means there’s value to be had in backing the hosts to win without conceding.
