It’s been a while since Wrexham have been the low-spending underdogs in a league match but here we are. As League One games go, this Birmingham v Wrexham clash on Monday night is a biggie with narrative all over the shop that’s surely worthy of a Hollywood documentary episode of its own.
Time will tell, but this should really be appointment viewing. Birmingham City have spent barmy money for a League One side this summer while the Wrexham story is well known. Who’s coming out on top on Monday night? Our tipster Colin Harvey has had a look at the markets.

Wrexham (+1)
These are two teams who have started the season on fire. Neither have lost a League One match so far, while Wrexham were top heading into the weekend with four wins and a draw from their five matches and the Blues were fourth with three wins and a draw from four.
City are Paddy’s favourites by virtue of playing at home but this Wrexham outfit look like serious title contenders and have conceded just two goals this season. Birmingham have ripped up the rulebook in this legue and it may well be that these two are battling for the title come May.
At the prices we have to side with the lads from north Wales but they might not have enough to win this contest. Instead, the price on Wrexham (+1) in the handicaps is too good to ignore and has us covered for two out of three eventualities in this match.
Both Teams to score
The firepower on display is quite something to behold at this level. City have scored in every league game so far but they do concede plenty as well, with both teams scoring 100% of the time.
Wrexham have been just as a good going forward but have conceded just two goals all season with both of them coming on the opening day. They’re on a four-game clean-sheet streak but no-one in the league will challenge them more than Birmingham City and you have to fancy both to score.
Over 2.5 goals
Hopefully we will see a few goals and it’s not a tense, nervy top-of-the-table affair. As mentioned, Wrexham have an amazing defensive record but they’ve scored eight in three, passing the over 2.5 goals benchmark by themselves in two occasions.
Overs has clicked in the last three of Birmingham City’s matches and they’ve conceded four in that time as well. Over 2.5 goals could be a conservative bet here.
Alfie May to score
Alfie May has been a very smart signing by the hosts and he’s carried on his great goal-scoring form from last season at Charlton at St Andrew’s. He’s got four in four and has an assist to his name to boot.
He’s a wily striker and combines the dark arts with quality to maximum effect. In a game full of stars Alfie May will be desperate to shine once again.
Jack Marriott to score
It’s not all about Paul Mullin at Wrexham anymore. Welshpool has had to come off the bench in the Dragons’ last three matches as he recovers from injury while Jack Marriott has been making hay in his absence.
The striker, who joined from Fleetwood over the summer, has three goals to his name and has started every league game for Wrexham this season. Assuming he keeps his place, Marriott to score is a decent price and he’ll be looking to bag in a third game in a row.
