Newcastle to win
I don’t think we need to spend a whole lot of time on this, but Newcastle are at their best when they’re winning close games. So far, they’ve done well against different opponents, and responding to different scenarios.
For a team with Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Harvey Barnes, their reliance on being solid and not wanting the ball is puzzling, but I appreciate Eddie Howe for understanding that they’re better without the ball.
Going away to Wolves means there won’t be an emphasis on keeping possession, which will suit. Wolves’ paltry start to the season means they’ll have to be on the front foot from the off to appease an already-restless crowd, which spells danger.
Conceding nine times in their three games isn’t the greatest indication that they will be encouraged, particularly as six of those came in their only other home game.
Alexander Isak anytime goalscorer
This is as much a Wolves leg as it is a Newcastle leg. And what I mean by that is, while I’m obviously an Isak truther, I’m a bigger believer in Wolves allowing opposing talismen to shine from central areas. Isak very much operates centrally, allowing Gordon and Barnes to maintain width.
And so far, through Wolves’ opening three games, they’ve conceded to Kai Havertz, Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer, Joao Felix and Chris Wood. Every one of those players picks up similar positions, and it’s the same area that Isak will hound.
Under 3.5 goals
For all that I’m keen on Wolves being a disaster, I also think this is a reasonable price about them not finding the net, and Newcastle not hitting four, with obvious failsafes built in.
Each of Newcastle’s first three games have hit the under, and none have been particularly dramatic. Even the goals they’ve conceded have come from individual errors rather than systemic problems with how they’re playing.
If you think back to Dan Burn’s own goal, that’s a total flop from Nick Pope. And they were caught being too cute on the edge of their box against Bournemouth, which saw Marcus Tavernier net with ease.
Anthony Gordon to be fouled 3+ times
My god, do we ever love it? Speaking writer to reader, we’re not totally surprised that someone would want to kick Anthony Gordon. Multiple things could set you off at any moment, but the primary reason is that he’s just got quicker feet than most people.
After two starts for England, you might worry about his legs, but he was taken off in both games, so should be right as rain to cause havoc here. His development as a footballer has been a bigger surprise than his persistence with that haircut, and that’s no mean feat.
But there’s no denying that he’s now one of the better wide players in the league and certainly one of the top three most kickable.
