Spurs +1

Tottenham should feel good about their chances of getting a positive result against Arsenal. This North London derby is played in the peculiar context of the visiting side being seriously hampered by midfield selection problems.

Spurs haven’t been at their absolute best in the opening weeks of the campaign but did win their previous home encounter 4-0 against Everton, which should fuel confidence in Ange Postecoglou’s side that they will be able to avenge the 3-2 defeat they suffered against the Gunners in April.

Mikel Arteta’s side, meanwhile, might have beaten Aston Villa 2-0 in their previous away game. Still, their opponents actually generated a bigger xG than them in that game, and it will take a mightily impressive performance for them to come away from their rivals with maximum points here.

Over 2.5 goals

If there is one thing these matches have guaranteed in recent seasons, it’s goals and excitement. Eight of the last 10 meetings between Tottenham and Arsenal have seen at least three goals, while half have seen four or more. Expect more of the same on Sunday.

Postecoglou loves his side to play in an attacking manner, which has led to Spurs scoring four times in the two matches he has overseen for them against the Gunners. However, this forward-thinking stance can make them vulnerable, and last season they conceded 1.79 goals per match in the Premier League.

Spurs’ Premier League matches last term averaged 3.55 goals and they have started this season at a similar rate, with their three games to date producing nine goals.

Although none of Arsenal’s previous three have seen Over 2.5 goals, they are liable to be drawn into a bit of a slugfest here.

Bukayo Saka to have 1+ shots on target

With Arsenal’s midfield depleted, and notably Martin Odegaard liable to miss out, Bukayo Saka’s importance to his team will only increase. This is the type of pressure the young winger typically thrives upon.

He overwhelmingly leads Arsenal in shots this season, with 10 in the Premier League, he also leads in shots on target. He has seven so far, compared to Kai Havertz’s three. No one else in Arteta’s ranks has more than two.

After scoring in both games against Spurs last term, expect him to test home goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario at least once in this clash, with the odds in him doing so very generous indeed.

Son Heung-min to have 1+ shots on target

Heung-Min Son scored three goals across the two matches against Arsenal last season, which will earmark him as Tottenham’s major threat in this game, despite the arrival of Dominic Solanke, providing Postecoglou with his long-awaited replacement for Harry Kane in attack.

If anything, this could help Son. Space will now be freed up for him given that Spurs have another legitimate scoring threat. Solanke, after all, had three shots on target during his debut against Newcastle last time out.

Son, meanwhile, managed three shots on target against Everton in their previous home game and should be heavily favoured to get at least one in this clash.

Over 5.5 cards

Expect a competitive clash between these rivals, particularly with referee Jarred Gillett in charge.

The 37-year-old Australian is not a match official noted for his restraint when it comes to giving out cards. Putting aside the Community Shield, which is a semi-competitive fixture at best, he has shown 18 cards across the three other matches he has officiated this season.

Last term, he averaged a shade under 4.7 cards per match in the Premier League, ranking him second among officials who had taken charge of 20 or more games in the top flight.

With this likely to be a spicy affair, there were 10 cards shown across the two fixtures last season, the card-happy ref is likely to find himself having a busy afternoon.
