Greece to win

I understand this is a new era, and Stephen Kenny is the easiest comparison we’ll ever make. At least in the minds of people who are still swearing by the creed of Italia ’90 where raw aggression and national pride somehow materialised wins.

It definitely wasn’t anything to do with the multiple top-tier players playing in England or anything.

But to see suggestions that Kenny would have lost 4-0 against England is hilarious. England could have scored six if they wanted, and only for mass changes and a new manager’s first game, they probably would have.

Ireland are shambolic, and a manager coming out and saying he’s still learning about the squad and relying on John O’Shea paints a pretty big picture of where this team is at.

Anastasios Bakasetas to Have 1+ Shots on Target

Anastasios Bakasetas absolutely rinsed Ireland in Athens the last time these teams met. You know, at the time when Gus Poyet, who in retrospect is far too qualified for the Ireland job, was the front runner to take it – and some looked down on the idea.

Well, back then, they created space centrally for Bakasetas to operate in by pinning Matt Doherty to the touchline. Doherty was probably Ireland’s worst player on Saturday.

There is no reason to think the same tactic won’t be employed, and the best technical player on the pitch won’t have a field day.

Over 2.5 goals

Ireland conceded twice inside the opening half an hour against England, and while that’s not a like for like comparison to playing Greece, it is worth noting they’re clearly not locking in early doors.

It wasn’t fatigue that saw Jack Grealish and Declan Rice in a tonne of space – it was a lack of focus. And if that is going to continue against a team who you think less of, despite the tactical masterclass they put on only a year ago, then it’s going to be a long night.

Greece stuck three past Finland and didn’t even play that well, so when expecting them to raise their game slightly off the back of a positive result, this doesn’t really bode well, does it?

And we won’t even have a nationwide discourse on footballing nationalism to fall back on. How sad.

Jayson Molumby to Commit 2+ Fouls

Jayson Molumby is the type of player that, in games you win, he’s praised for it. That’s because people don’t want to be obvious and thank the goal scorers. They want to find someone who threw themselves around a lot, and Molumby is the perfect example.

However, in games where it goes wrong – like this one – all he’s going to do is take heavy touches, commit fouls and complain that everyone around him isn’t willing to get sent off.

As if that’s some sort of testament to his commitment to the cause.

Greece don’t keep possession to the extent of England, so these fouls won’t be out of frustration. They’ll be out of the realisation that he was caught of position because he took a decoy and had to stop an ongoing attack.
