Jarrod Bowen to Have 2 or More Shots on Target

It’s obviously a difficult thing to know how a new manager will set teams up.

What we saw from Gareth Southgate often boiled down to being cautious and then expecting a big moment from a key player.

I get it, obviously – it’s the most expensive international squad on planet earth. But we learned a few things about Lee Carsley from the biggest snorefest seen in Dublin since the premiere of Mrs. Brown’s Boys.

The first thing is that it’s a much more systemic approach. It’s not about getting the ball in good areas and slowing it down. It’s about getting the ball in behind to turn defenders’ heads.

Carsley knows that while Harry Kane might statistically represent his best chance of converting, it doesn’t present his best route to consistently produce big chances.

Funnelling becomes predictable as Kane acts as a way to occupy two centre halves and leave one-on-ones.

Given we expect him to rotate, due to two games in four days, anyone who came off the bench is likely going to see extended playing time.

Jarrod Bowen is the type of player who’s well-versed in finding opportunities to shoot from tight angles, and given Finland are narrow to begin with, he’s the likely beneficiary from Carsleyball on Tuesday evening.

Declan Rice to Have 1 or More Shot on Target

Listen, I don’t need to go into Declan Rice chat. It’s already occupied far too much of my life. But the most notable thing about England was how they committed four midfielders to central areas and then rotated which of them stepped into the space on the edge of the opposition box when the ball went in behind.

Rice’s finish in Dublin was a prime example of that – and something that’s been sorely missed in an England squad for a long time.

Yes, Bellingham does it. But he’s not tied down to sit and break up play just in case a winger loses the ball. Rice has that responsibility, but it shifts from time to time – making it harder for opposition players to track movement.

Given Finland may sit even be deeper than Ireland, Rice should find those ten-yard pockets to operate it. And you know what they say – scoring one frees you up to take a pop when you feel like it.

Wasn’t a bad strike either, tbf.

Oliver Antman to Have 1 or More Shot on Target

All that rotation does sometimes leave England slightly more exposed than they would have been under Southgate.

Chiedozie Ogbene had plenty of joy on Saturday, and that’s primarily because the England full backs didn’t just bomb on – they maintained their positions a touch further back, and it meant England’s plan of attack was more centred around the middle of the pitch.

Oliver Antman shares a similar profile, and given Teemu Pukki’s advancing age, and Benjamin Kallman being about as useful as a Helsinki sauna in a heatwave, it’s like Finland will focus their efforts on goal from wider positions.
