Germany v Hungary
UEFA Nations League match at the Merkur Spiel-Arena, Dusseldorf
TV: Premier Sports, 19:45
Both teams to score
Germany will be eager to build on their good showing at Euro 2024 where they met their end in a quarter-final loss to eventual winners Spain.
Hungary won just one of their games at the Euros, a 0-1 win over a bad Scotland side with a last-minute goal. Germany won’t be too nervous coming into this.
The big question for this match is whether the away side can land a punch, and the stats look good for an away goal. Julian Nagelsmann’s side kept just two clean sheets over their five games at the Euros and kept just two clean sheets over their last 10 home matches prior to the Euros. One was Peru, the other was Ukraine, and Hungary are a bit better than those sides.
The away side have scored 15 goals over their last 10 away games, including their 0-4 demolition of England and 0-1 win over Germany in the Nations League. It’s against the market, but the value is in backing both sides to score.
Kai Havertz anytime goalscorer
Nagelsmann doesn’t like to start with Niclas Fullkrug leading the line, so it’s a little odd to see him as the favourite to score here. Then again, with 13 goals over 21 senior appearances, Paddy’s probably spot on with the prices.
Fullkrug has only made three substitute appearances for West Ham in the Premier League so far though, and is yet to score. Instead, Arsenal’s Kai Havertz looks like a more likely contender here. He’s already bagged two goals for the Gunners this season, scored two at the Euros, and has another four over Germany’s friendlies leading up to the Euros.
He’ll be starting ahead of Fullkrug and will be eager to get on the scoresheet.
Netherlands v Bosnia-Herzegovina
UEFA Nations League match at the Philips Stadion, Eindhoven
TV: Premier Sports, 19:45
Netherlands -1
Bosnia’s fall from grace has been tough to watch. They’ve lost all six of their most recent fixtures and failed to score in three of them. Looking at just their away games, they’ve only won one of their last 10, and that was against Liechtenstein.
Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands had a bit of a strange Euros. After easily dismissing Poland in the Group stage, they then had a 0-0 battle with France and lost 2-3 to Austria. Four points was enough to see them into the knockout stages, where they beat both Romania and Turkey without too much fuss and then lost 1-2 to an England side that had been atrocious, unlike Ollie Watkins, who fired in a late winner.
This Netherlands squad is undoubtedly full of talent and potential, and they should win this one by at least two goals without too much trouble.
Cody Gakpo anytime goalscorer
Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo was the standout player for the Dutch at the Euros, scoring three goals over his six games and had scored three over his five Euro qualification matches. He’s not featured much for Arne Slot so far this season, just 53 minutes over three substitute appearances, but Koeman will most certainly be starting him.
Memphis Depay is in the squad despite being a free agent after Atletico Madrid didn’t offer him a new contract, so you’d have to wonder whether he’ll start. Man United’s Joshua Zirkzee is more of a playmaker than a scorer, and then there’s Wout Weghorst, who Koeman only likes to use as an impact sub.
It’s all on Gakpo, then, but that won’t bother him. We saw at the Euros that he’s more than capable of scoring goals for his national side.
Ukraine v Albania
UEFA Nations League match at the Epet Arena, Prague
TV: Premier Sports, 19:45
Both teams to score
Albania won over plenty of fans thanks to their displays at the Euros. They gave Italy a good game in their first match, losing 1-2 in the end, drew 2-2 with Croatia and were rather unlucky not to scrape a draw against eventual champions Spain in their final group game.
Ukraine made a mess of their first game, losing 3-0 to Romania, they beat Slovakia 1-2 following that but couldn’t beat Belgium and were sent packing.
This match is being played in Prague, which will be fine for them as they’ve been swapping between playing in either Poland or Czech Republic for their internationals, so they’ll have a decent amount of support behind them.
They’ve scored seven goals in their last five matches and conceded seven, while Albania scored nine and conceded five.
