Scotland v Poland betting tips

Scotland to win
Lyndon Dykes to have 1+ shots on target
Robert Lewandowski to have 4+ shots
Scotland goalkeeper to make 3+ saves
Grant Hanley to commit 1+ fouls

WHEN: Thursday 5th of September – 7.45pm
WHERE: Hampden Park, Glasgow

Scotland to win

This is a must-win game for Scotland if they are to survive relegation from League A of the UEFA Nations League. The Scots find themselves in a group with Portugal, Croatia and Poland and must target home games against Croatia and Poland if they are to make any noise in the top tier of the Nations League.

They have an opportunity to put their difficult Euros campaign behind them on Thursday night against a Poland side that endured an equally difficult time of it over the summer. Poland only qualified for the Euros after finding themselves in a qualification route with Estonia and Wales after finishing with just 11 points in a group topped by Albania.

They are more than beatable and Scotland will look to repeat the type of performances that saw them triumph against both Spain and Norway in qualifying for the Euros.

Lyndon Dykes to have 1+ shots on target

Scotland managed just three shots on target throughout the Euros over the summer in a dismal display of attacking adventure. However, they have rarely been goal-shy at Hampden Park under Steve Clarke, scoring ten goals in four home games during the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

It was Scott McTominay who was goal-scorer-in-chief during that campaign, with Lyndon Dykes only scoring one in qualifying, although it was an incredibly important one, coming in the form of an equaliser in Norway as Scotland snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Dykes moved from QPR to Birmingham this summer after only completing five minutes for QPR, but he still managed to notch himself a goal prior to the move. He is a decent bet to have a shot on target on Thursday.

Robert Lewandowski to have 4+ shots

Robert Lewandowski might be 36, but he is not showing age at the start of the season. The Polish striker has scored four goals in four games at the start of the Spanish league season as Barcelona raced four points clear at the top of the table.

Lewandowski averages well over four shots per game in La Liga and there is every chance that he will repeat that average in Scotland on Thursday. Scotland faced a combined total of 45 shots in their three Euros group games over the summer and will likely have to batten down the hatches at stages during Thursday’s Nations League opener.

There is a good chance that Lewandowski will be responsible for at least four of those shots.

Scotland goalkeeper to make 3+ saves

It is hardly surprising that Scotland also faced a high volume of shots on target during the Euros this summer. The Scots faced an average of more than six shots on target per game during the group stages of the Euros, with Angus Gunn producing an average of four saves per match.

Assuming he starts on Thursday, there is every chance that he will record the slightly lower number of three saves when Poland come to town.

Grant Hanley to commit 1+ fouls

Grant Hanley is a very attractive price to commit just one foul on Thursday, considering he was among the most persistent foulers in the Scottish squad at the Euros. The Norwich centre back averaged 1.3 fouls per game in Scotland’s three group games at the Euros, leaving him in tied second behind Che Adams in the Scottish squad.

Considering he is facing a street-wise striker who knows how to draw a foul, there is a good chance that Hanley will commit to a foul against Lewandowski over the course of 90 minutes. It is certainly worth a look at a very generous price.
