Bayer Leverkusen v RB Leipzig

Bundesliga match at BayArena, Leverkusen
KO: 5:30pm

Bayer Leverkusen to win and both teams to score

Bayer Leverkusen kicked off their Bundesliga title defence last Friday in true form with a 3-2 win thanks to a last-minute winner away at Borussia Mönchengaldbach. Xabi Alonso’s side were 2-0 up and cruising at half-time before being pegged back to 2-2 with five minutes to play. As he so often was last season, Florian Wirtz was the hero, scoring in 90+5 to snatch the three points.

RB Leipzig began their Bundesliga campaign with a win, albeit a lacklustre one, at home to Bochum. The Red Bulls won by a goal to nil thanks to debutant Antonio Nusa. They could have had a lot more if their strikers had brought their shooting boots with them. Leipzig took 13 shots and found the target only three times.

Last season, this fixture was blessed with goals as both games ended 3-2 in favour of Leverkusen. I expect it to be no different this time around as teams become determined to end the champions’ unbeaten streak. Furthermore, Marco Rose is blessed with attacking talent at his disposal. Lois Openda, Benjamin Sesko, Xavi Simons, and Nusa can all find the net. In comparison, the hosts have scored in 13 consecutive home games and showed last week that they are in no mood to slow down. So I’m backing Bayer Leverkusen to win and both teams to score.

Lazio v AC Milan

Serie A match at the Stadio Olimpico, Milan
KO: 7:45pm

Christian Pulisic to score

Both sides suffered surprise 2-1 defeats last weekend and will want to bounce back in their final game before the international break. Lazio fell short away at Udinese, while newly promoted Parma caught Milan out.

It has been a poor start to the campaign for 2022 champions Milan, who have accrued only one point in their opening two games. In contrast, Lazio opened their campaign with a comfortable 3-1 victory over newly promoted Venezia.

Neither side looks settled in defence, conceding goals in each of their games this season, which could allow both sides’ attacking talent to thrive under the lights in Rome. Christian Pulisic has been Milan’s biggest threat going forward and carried on his form from the Olympics by bagging Milan’s only goal last week. Manager Paolo Fonseca cannot call upon injured Alvaro Morata on Saturday, giving the American more licence to go for goal. Therefore, I’m going with Christian Pulisic to score.

Napoli v Parma

Serie A match at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, Naples
KO: 7:45pm

Napoli to win and Romelu Lukaku to score

Napoli came to life last weekend with a 3-0 win at home against Bologna, rectifying their disappointing 3-0 defeat away in Verona from the week before. Antonio Conte’s side looked much more settled in their second game and, thanks to three second-half goals, got their first three points on the board.

Parma have enjoyed their return to the top flight so far, taking a draw in its opening game and securing its first shock win last weekend by beating AC Milan 2-1. With more rebirths than any sound doctor would prescribe, the club faces its first big away test as it travels to Naples on Saturday.

Romelu Lukaku reunites with his former Inter boss, Conte, this weekend after finally ending his nightmare return to Chelsea. Napoli becomes his third Serie A club, a league where he has thrived everywhere he has gone. The Belgian will likely go straight into the starting 11 on Saturday, and it would be true to form if he marked his return with a goal and won. Therefore, it’s only fitting to back Napoli to win and Romelu Lukaku to score.

Valencia v Villarreal

La Liga match at the Mestalla Stadium, Valencia
KO: 8:30pm

Both teams to score

Valencia have endured the worst start imaginable to their 2024/25 season, taking 0 points from their opening three games. Los Che sit bottom of La Liga and their tough start continues as they welcome Villarreal to the Mestalla on Saturday night.

Contrastingly, the visitors have enjoyed their campaign so far, taking two wins and a draw in their games, leaving them second in the table. They have also been exciting to watch, snatching the three points on Monday from Celta Vigo in a seven-goal thriller.

The hosts will desperately want to end their losing run before the international break but will find it challenging to get anything from their opponents. However, they have found a knack for scoring despite the poor results, and the Yellow Submarine hasn’t kept a clean sheet this season, so the home fans may get something to cheer about. With that in mind, I’m backing both teams to score.
