Wolves v Burnley
Carabao Cup Second Round match at Molinuex, Wolverhampton
TV: Sky Sports+, Wednesday, 7:30pm
Burnley to win
Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup action gets underway with Premier League side Wolves hosting Burnley at Molineux.
Gary O’Neil’s side have suffered back-to-back defeats in the opening fortnight of the top-flight season and shipped six goals at home to Chelsea on Sunday.
They have only been past the Third Round once in the last four years and a Second Round showdown with Burnley will not be on O’Neil’s list of priorities.
Burnley slipped up at Sunderland over the weekend, but Scott Parker’s team won their previous two league outings by an combined score of 9-1, so we’re kicking off with a ‘shock’ Burnley win on the road.
AFC Wimbledon v Ipswich Town
Carabao Cup Second Round match at Cherry Red Records Stadium, London
TV: Sky Sports+, Wednesday, 7:45pm
Both teams to score
The Premier League gods have not been kind to Ipswich Town on their first Premier League season in two decades after pairing them against Liverpool and Manchester City in their opening two games.
Expected successive losses have followed, with Sammie Szmodics’ early goal at the Etihad Stadium a bright note, on an otherwise tough day in Manchester.
Like so many Premier League teams in a likely relegation battle this season, the Carabao Cup is not the focus, but AFC Wimbledon have kept just two clean sheets so far in 2024/25, with five goals conceded across five games.
Cardiff City v Southampton
Carabao Cup Second Round match at the Cardiff City Stadium, Cardiff
TV: Sky Sports+, Wednesday, 7:45pm
Southampton to win
Southampton have joined fellow Premier League returnees Ipswich in losing their opening two games of the season. But the Saints have battled out much tighter contests, with a pair of 1-0 losses against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.
Russell Martin still cuts a calm touchline figure, and a midweek cup jaunt to South Wales could be a chance for a confidence boost, with the hosts struggling.
The Bluebirds snatched a late derby draw with Swansea City over the weekend, but they lost their two previous league outings, failing to score in either.
Colchester United v Brentford
Carabao Cup Second Round match at Colchester Community Stadium, Colchester
TV: Sky Sports+, Wednesday, 7:45pm
Brentford to win and over 2.5 goals
With so much attention on Ivan Toney’s potential move to Saudi Arabia, Brentford fans will be grateful for some midweek football to distract them, as the Bees buzz over to Colchester.
Defeat at Liverpool over the weekend will not be a major blow for the experienced Thomas Frank, who already has a win in the bank, after beating Crystal Palace 2-1 on the opening weekend.
Hosts Colchester have kept just one clean sheet in all competitions so far this season with two of those four matches featuring over 2.5 goals scored in total.
West Ham v Bournemouth
Carabao Cup Second Round match at the London Stadium, London
TV: Sky Sports+, Wednesday, 7:45pm
Both teams to score
We wrap up Wednesday’s Carabao Cup acca with an all-Premier League affair as West Ham host Bournemouth.
The Hammers gritted out a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace over the weekend, after losing at Aston Villa in their opener, with Bournemouth drawing both of their games 1-1 so far in 2024/25.
Both teams scored in both of their games so far this season, and they will fancy their chances of troubling the respective backlines here, ahead of huge home Premier League games this weekend as West Ham host Man City and Bournemouth welcome Chelsea.
