Alaves v Real Betis

La Liga match at Estadio de Mendizorroza, Alava, Spain
KO: 6:15pm

Under 2.5 goals

Real Betis travel to Alaves on Sunday, having won 2-0 in their Conference League playoff first leg away in Slovakia on Thursday evening. The result puts them in good stead to qualify for the group stage and allows them to focus on their league fixture this weekend.

After a 1-1 draw at home to Girona last week, Betis will be determined to get three points on the board. However, it will be tough with their games coming thick and fast and Alaves’ defensive stubbornness.

The hosts began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat away at Celta Vigo last Friday. They were sunk by an 84th-minute Iago Aspas winner after having led for 50 minutes earlier in the game.

I expect a low-scoring game here. Neither side has recorded more than four shots on target in their league games, and Betis could not put more than two goals past Kvyvbas on Thursday. So, I’m backing under 2.5 goals.

Marseille v Reims

Ligue 1 match at the Orange Velodrome, Marseille
KO: 7:45pm

Marseille to win and over 1.5 goals

Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille got their league campaign off to a flying start last weekend, beating Brest 5-1. Goals from new arrivals Mason Greenwood and Elye Wahi, plus one from stalwart Luis Henrique, were enough to give the Brighton boss the start to French football he craved.

Reims fell to a 2-0 defeat against Lille last Sunday as they began life without former manager Will Still. New boss Luka Elsner would have liked a more leisurely start to his new job as his side may suffer again in this one.

Marseille will want to continue their strong start to the season, with this being their first opportunity to display their new look in front of their home fans. I expect them to get the job done again, thanks to their firepower up front and Reims continuing to adjust to their new manager’s style of play against another formidable opponent.

I can see this being another Marseille win and over 1.5 goals.

Napoli v Bologna

Serie A match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona
KO: 7:45pm

Draw

New Napoli boss Antonio Conte couldn’t have asked for a worse start last weekend. His side fell to a 3-0 defeat against Hellas Verona. His side struggled to break their opponents down despite having most of the ball. With Victor Osimhen unlikely to stay in Naples this season and Romelu Lukaku yet to be announced, their problems in front of goal may continue.

Bologna began their Serie A campaign with a steady 1-1 draw away at Udinese last Sunday, earning a draw thanks to a Riccardo Orsolini penalty. Manager Vincenzo Italiano is tasked with filling Thiago Motta’s big shoes as he prepares his side for an unprecedented Champions League campaign.

Napoli are winless in eight games stretching back to last season. They also failed to score past this weekend’s opponents in either game last season, with Bologna taking the win in Naples.

This game could be intriguing to watch as both sides look to find their feet under their new talisman. With neither side ready yet, I see this as a low-scoring draw.

Roma v Empoli

Serie A match at the Stadio Olimpico, Rome
KO: 7:45pm

Roma to win and Artem Dovbyk to score

The other game in Serie A on Sunday night sees Daniele De Rossi’s Roma welcome Roberto D’Aversa’s Empoli to Italy’s capital. Both sides began their campaign with stalemates: Roma drew 0-0 away at Cagliari, while Empoli drew 0-0 at home to Monza.

De Rossi’s new-look side is beginning to take shape. With the arrival of Artem Dovbyk and Paulo Dybala confirming his stay, the former midfielder has a lot of firepower at his disposal.

The hosts will want to give their home crowd something to cheer on Sunday, having only won one of their last eight in all competitions. However, they did thrash Empoli 7-0 at the Stadio Olimpico last season, giving them their eighth victory in the previous nine against them.

Roma have far too much attacking talent to go without scoring again, and with Dybala now available to support him up top, I can see Dovbyk getting off the mark. So I’m backing Roma to win and Dovbyk to score.

Atletico Madrid v Girona

La Liga match at Estadio Civitas Metropolitano, Madrid
KO: 8:30pm

Atletico Madrid to win

We finish as we started with a match from La Liga: Atletico Madrid welcome Girona in Sunday’s late kick-off. Diego Simeone’s side twice came from behind to draw 2-2 away at Villarreal last weekend, while Girona drew 1-1 away at Betis.

The hosts finished fourth last season, five points behind this weekend’s opponents in third. They have made impressive additions over the summer, welcoming Julian Alvarez and Conor Gallagher from the Premier League and Villarreal’s goal machine, Alexander Sorloth.

Girona are preparing for their Champions League debut this season, but without star players Artem Dovbyk and Aleix Garcia, they will find it difficult to replicate that this term.

Atletico won 3-1 in this fixture last season, and it will be tricky for Girona to avoid defeat here. With Alvarez and Gallagher now at their disposal, I think they will have too much for the Catalan side. Therefore, I am backing Atletico Madrid to win.
