There were no real surprises in the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool all won, the three promoted teams picked up a solitary point, and Chelsea fielded players unfamiliar to their manager, never mind you.

What have we got this week? The same as the above, most likely. We don’t have a match between two established big six clubs, but we have five games kicking off at 3pm on Saturday.

Here’s a player prop selection for each, which you can combine in an Acca. They are also all eligible for Paddy Power’s Super Sub offer, so if your chosen player is given the hook by his manager, the man who comes off the bench as the replacement takes over your bet.

Crystal Palace v West Ham

Eberechi Eze to have 1+ shots on target

We’ll begin at Selhurst Park, where Crystal Palace host West Ham. This is a battle between two teams that lost their opening match, so the pressure will be on if another defeat follows.

Having lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich much rests on the shoulders of Eberechi Eze for the Eagles. While he didn’t score at Brentford last week, with seven shots, he had half of Palace’s total and the most in the division in match week one.

He put three of them between the posts, doing likewise in 19 matches last term. That’s not bad for a player with 24 starts, so back Eze to have one or more shots on target against the not-so-happy Hammers.

Fulham v Leicester

Harry Winks to be shown a card

Across town at Fulham, we find another two clubs looking for their first win of 2024/25. The visitors are Leicester, who lost 5-3 in their previous match at Craven Cottage.

Thanks to the presence of referee Darren Bond, we can expect cards. He’s inexperienced at this level, but no current Premier League ref with at least as many matches has a higher booking rate.

His last match at Fulham last year saw four yellow cards and a red. This is bad news for Harry Winks, one of the Championship’s most reliable players for committing fouls last season.

He also collected seven of his nine yellow cards on the road. With Bond punishing away teams more often with cards, we can expect Winks to be shown one.

Manchester City v Ipswich

Bernardo Silva to score

The weekend’s most one-sided match will undoubtedly occur at the Etihad Stadium, with four-time defending champions Manchester City hosting Championship runners-up Ipswich Town.

From our point of view, the problem is figuring out how Pep Guardiola will deploy his squad. Julian Alvarez started all three home games with newly promoted sides last season but is no longer around. Does that mean Erling Haaland will start a match for which he would usually be rested?

It’s probably worth waiting for the team news. In the meantime, here’s a case for Bernardo Silva scoring. He’s amassed almost two expected goals since he last scored in the Premier League, and only 11 players in the division had more shots in the box than him last weekend.

Silva netted in a 6-1 win over Bournemouth last season and can be an anytime goalscorer in a similar fixture.

Southampton v Nottingham Forest

Morgan Gibbs-White to commit 1+ fouls

If it’s far too early to call Southampton versus Nottingham Forest a relegation six-pointer, Paddy Power does at least expect both to finish in the bottom five this season. It should be fiercely contested.

Ryan Yates is the obvious choice to commit a foul. Only two men were penalised more times in the Premier League last season, and he added three to his career tally against Bournemouth last weekend.

However, so did Morgan Gibbs-White. There’s a lot more value in his price to commit one or more fouls, and he was joint-14th in the division—ahead of Yates—for seeing this selection payout in 2023/24.

Tottenham v Everton

Son Heung-min to have 1+ shots on target

Our quintet of matches rounds off with Everton’s trip to Tottenham. It should have been a home debut for Dominic Solanke, who is (at the time of writing) the most expensive signing made by a Premier League club this summer.

But an ankle knock has put paid to him, so we’ll take Son instead of Dom. The South Korean has done well in this fixture in north London, scoring in two of the last three editions and having at least one shot on target in the last five in a row.

Son Heung-min only had one blocked shot at Leicester on Monday, but you can usually rely on him to test the keeper. Only Ollie Watkins had an effort on target in more top-flight matches than his total of 25 last season. Son rounds off our Bet Builder with one or more shots on target.
