Celta Vigo v Valencia
La Liga match at Estadio Abanca-Baladios, Vigo
KO: 6:30pm
Valencia to win
Celta Vigo are at the top of La Liga following last week’s 2-1 opening win against Deportivo Alaves. An 84th-minute winner from Iago Aspas secured the three points, leaving them first alphabetically.
Valencia had a more challenging game away at Barcelona for their opening fixture, losing 2-1. Ruben Baraja’s side led briefly after Hugo Duro’s opener, but Robert Lewandowski pegged them back with two goals on either side of halftime. Los Ches were unlucky in not taking any points from the match.
It will be a close game in Friday’s early evening kick-off, but with Valencia going toe-to-toe with Barcelona last week and after winning five of the previous eight meetings against Celta Vigo, I give them the edge, narrowly.
Borussia Mönchengladbach v Bayer Leverkusen
Bundesliga match at BORUSSIA-PARK, Mönchengladbach
KO: 7:30pm
Bayer Leverkusen to win and both teams to score
The Bundesliga returns this Friday and kicks off with the champions as Bayer Leverkusen travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The unbeaten title holders continued their knack for late-game savers last weekend in the DFL Supercup. Patrik Schick’s 88th-minute equaliser took the game to penalties, which Die Werkself went on to win.
Mönchengladbach will want to start the 2024/25 campaign much better than they ended the last one. They finished 14th, one point above relegation, their worst finish since 2011. The club have given Manager Gerardo Seoane a second chance; however, a lack of transfer movement over the summer suggests another season of mediocrity.
Despite their poor spot in the table, Gladbach still found the net 56 times in 34 games last season. Bayer’s knack for letting in goals could make this a tight game. However, after thrashing their opponents at BORUSSIA-PARK 3-0 last season, and with Xabi Alonso still at the helm, I back the champions to have enough to start their title defence with a win.
PSG v Montpellier
Ligue 1 match at the Parc Des Princes, Paris
KO: 7:45pm
PSG to win and over 2.5 goals
Life without Kylian Mbappe began last Friday for PSG, who won 4-1 at Le Havre. It was a late flurry for Luis Enrique’s side, with three goals coming after the 83rd minute.
Montpellier began their campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Strasbourg last weekend, thanks to a penalty from Teji Savanier. However, Laurent Nicollin’s side may struggle to gain a similar result against the champions.
Goals blessed this fixture last season, with PSG winning 3-0 at home and securing a dramatic 6-2 win away. As it’s Les Parisien’s first home game of the season, I expect more of the same.
Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds
Championship match at Hillsborough, Sheffield
KO: 8pm
Both teams to score
Sheffield Wednesday have experienced both ends of the footballing spectrum since the start of the new season. Danny Rohl’s side opened with a 4-0 victory at home to Plymouth Argyle before losing 4-0 away to Sunderland last weekend.
In comparison, Leeds have yet to experience any joy this season, going winless in their opening three games in all competitions. They began with a dramatic 3-3 draw against newly promoted Portsmouth, followed by elimination from the League Cup and another draw against West Brom.
Games under the lights on a Friday night always come with an air of unpredictability in the Championship. Despite one clean sheet each this term, both have conceded five and six goals, respectively. So, I expect to see both teams on the scoresheet.
Sevilla v Villarreal
La Liga match at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Seville
KO: 8:30pm
Over 2.5 goals
Sevilla and Villarreal have been steadily declining this year, with both missing European qualification in the last campaign. This result was a disappointment for two previous stalwarts on the continent.
Both teams similarly began their 2024/25 seasons, securing 2-2 draws on the opening weekend. However, Villarreal would be happier, with their result coming at home against Atletico Madrid, while Sevilla’s result came against slightly lesser opponents in Las Palmas.
This fixture last season saw both sides find the net in both games, with a 1-1 draw in Seville and Villarreal taking the win 3-2 at home. With both searching for their first win of the season and netting two goals each in their opening game, the odds for more of the same coming here are tasty, and it’s certainly worth a punt.
