James Maddison to have one or more shots on target
Spurs were one of the best teams to watch in the Premier League last season, scoring 74 goals and conceding 61 in a season that brought plenty of drama at both ends of the pitch. Ange Postecoglou’s style of football pretty much guarantees an absence of dull games for the foreseeable future and Monday’s season opener against newly-promoted Leicester should be no exception.
With that in mind, there should be plenty of goalmouth action and few players are more likely to register a shot on target than James Maddison. He enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in north London last season, scoring four goals and registering nine assists in the league.
He ranked third amongst Tottenham players in terms of shots last season and fourth in terms of shots on target, registering 58 shots and 23 efforts on target. There is a very good chance that he finds the target.
Brennan Johnson to have one or more shots on target
Brennan Johnson, similarly, enjoyed a fairly respectable maiden campaign at Spurs, without ever really setting the world alight. Johnson scored five times in the league after signing from Nottingham Forest, registering ten assists.
The Welsh winger also registered 19 shots on target from 50 shots in the league last season, averaging a shot on target for virtually every 90 minutes he played last year.
Considering Spurs ranked fourth for shots and fifth for shots on target in the league last season, averaging 5.7 per game, they are likely to find the target a number of times on Monday and there is a good chance that Johnson will be among them.
Stephy Mavididi to have one or more shots on target
No Leicester player attempted more shots or registered more shots on target than Stephy Mavididi last season. The English forward finished the 2023/24 with 12 league goals, attempting 88 shots and registering 34 shots on target during the campaign for an average of around one shot on target per game.
His conversion rate leaves a little to be desired, but he is clearly not afraid to try his luck. Leicester may be a newly-promoted side playing against away at one of the top teams in the league, but they will have their moments on Monday and will be encouraged Spurs’ porous defensive record last season.
Spurs faced an average of over 12 shots per game last campaign and there is a decent chance that Leicester will find some joy. Mavididi, therefore, is a good bet to find the target at least one effort on goal.
Ricardo Pereira to have one or more shots on target
One of the most experienced members of the Leicester squad, Ricardo Pereira for sure represents an outside bet to find the target on Monday night, but the right back is excellent value to do so. Pereira scored three league goals en route to Leicester’s immediate return to the Premier League last season and has scored in all but one of his six seasons at the club.
Pereira attempted only 27 shots in the Championship last season but found the target with almost exactly half of them, an extremely impressive accuracy rate. He will try to get forward on Monday and is a tempting bet to find the target on one of those forays.
Pape Sarr to have one or more shots on target
Pape Sarr enjoyed a breakout campaign at Spurs last season, featuring in 34 of 38 Premier League games and proving a vital part of Postecoglou’s plans. The 21-year-old scored three league goals last season and attempted 36 shots, averaging just over a shot per Premier League appearance.
He found the target 13 times at a rate of over one shot on target for every three shots, a similarly impressive rate of accuracy. Like Pereira, he is worth a look as an outside bet to find the target on Monday.
