Bayer Leverkusen v VfB Stuttgart

DFL Supercup match at the BayArena, Leverkusen
TV: Sky Sports Football, Saturday, 7:30pm

Over 2.5 goals

Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title defence does not start until next week with Xabi Alonso’s team warming up via a DFL Supercup clash against VfB Stuttgart.

All eyes will be on Alonso in the coming months, to see if his charges can hold off Bayern Munich once again, and they have won just once in normal time inside four preseason games.

Three of those four matches have included over 2.5 goals, and two of their three meetings with Stuttgart last season broke that barrier, and the goals should fly in this ‘competitive’ opener for Alonso.

AC Milan v Torino

Serie A match at the San Siro, Milan
TV: None, Saturday, 7:45pm

AC Milan to win and under 2.5 total goals

AC Milan kickoff their Serie A season at home to Torino on Saturday night. New boss Paulo Fonseca will be acutely aware of the challenge ahead after his team finished second behind rivals Inter Milan last season as their San Siro neighbours won the title by a whopping 19 points.

AC Milan were unbeaten in five preseason games, including wins over Manchester City and Real Madrid in the USA, and they should have little issue opening with a victory here.

AS Monaco v Saint-Etienne

Ligue 1 match at the Stade Louis II, Monaco
TV: None, Saturday, 8:00pm

AS Monaco to win and over 2.5 total goals

AS Monaco get the ball rolling on their Ligue 1 campaign at home to Saint-Etienne. Adi Hutter’s side head into this game on the back of winning the Joan Gamper Trophy at Barcelona last week as a major preseason boost.

They also won home and away against Saint-Etienne last season, via 4-1 and 3-1 victories, and the chances of high-scoring home win look solid here.

Benfica v Casa Pia

Primeira Liga match at the Estadia da Luz, Lisbon
TV: TrillerTV+, Saturday, 8:30pm

Benfica to win

Benfica are another team looking to improve on last season after losing out to their fierce rivals in a domestic title race as they finished 10 points behind champions Sporting Lisbon.

Roger Schmidt’s team won just two of their five preseason games, but they will be confident of an opening home victory of the season against Casa Pia, after losing their first match of the campaign last weekend.

Valencia v Barcelona

La Liga match at the Estadio Mestalla, Valencia
TV: Premier Sports 2, Saturday, 8:30pm

Robert Lewandowski to score

There is a new man in charge at Barcelona this season as Hansi Flick aims to get hold of Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid in the La Liga title race.

The former Bayern Munich boss missed out on Nico Williams over the summer but secured his Euro 2024 winning teammates Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig.

However, despite the newness surrounding Barcelona, an old head could be the one to look out for in this game. Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski scored twice in Barcelona’s final preseason game in the USA and the Polish striker netted a hat trick against Valencia last season.
