It's the new boys v the new boss in the early kick-off

Ipswich v Liverpool super sub bet builder tips, premier league, saturday 17th august 2024

Saturday’s Premier League games kick off with a lunchtime meeting of newly-promoted Ipswich, who face a Jurgen Klopp-less Liverpool at Portman Road.

Football tipster Andrew Beasley’s gone deep into the player markets for his best Ipswich v Liverpool betting tips, where Paddy’s Super Sub offer applies yet again this season.

Ipswich v Liverpool Bet Builder Tips

Mohamed Salah to score
Conor Chaplin to have 1 or more shots on target
Leif Davis anytime assist
Sam Morsy to commit 1 or more foul
Ryan Gravenberch to be fouled 1 or more times

WHEN: Saturday, August 17 – 12.30pm
WHERE: Portman Road
TV: TNT Sports

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Liverpool waved farewell to Jurgen Klopp in May after almost nine incredible years, but TNT Sports aren’t bothered about the name above the manager’s door at Anfield. If there’s a 12:30 slot to fill, new head coach Arne Slot can pick up where Klopp left off.

The Reds get 2024/25 underway against a newly promoted side, just as they did in four of the last five seasons. Liverpool have only won five of their last 12 away games against clubs freshly promoted from the Championship, with one of them needing a stoppage-time goal from Alisson Becker.

Portman Road will be rocking, with Ipswich Town back in the big time after an absence of over two decades. All the best, Arne.

Mohamed Salah to Score

Liverpool’s trump card for this match is undoubtedly Mohamed Salah. Between joining in 2017 and 2022, he scored in every first Premier League match of a new campaign. Last season at Chelsea, he had to settle for an assist, when he set up Luis Diaz in a 1-1 draw.

Either way, the Egyptian should be heavily involved. If there’s any potential doubt, it’s that he hasn’t made a goal contribution in Liverpool’s last five games on the road against newly promoted teams.

But the 32-year-old had a productive summer, scoring in a friendly win over Arsenal, as well as having at least three shots more than every other member of the squad across the pre-season programme. Salah netted in the opening weekend win at Norwich three years ago, so he may as well complete the Old Farm combo by being an anytime goalscorer here.

Conor Chaplin to have 1 or more Shots on Target

While Ipswich are unlikely to have too many shots on target, only Manchester City and the Gunners conceded fewer than the Reds last season. Every side Liverpool faced, bar one, managed to test their goalkeeper at least once. We’ll brush over that it was former Championship side Burnley on their own patch who drew a blank, to keep Town fans feeling optimistic.

The man most likely to have one or more shots on target is Conor Chaplin. He was Ipswich’s leading man for them last season, with his total of 40 the joint-seventh most in the Championship.

More importantly, from our perspective, he was consistent. Chaplin had at least one shot on target in 29 league matches last term, a tally only four men in the division bettered. ‘Charlie’ can warm Alisson Becker’s palms and maybe even beat the Brazilian to go down in club folklore.

Leif Davis Anytime Assist

One thing Slot will need to address at Liverpool is a relative weakness at defending set pieces which crept in last season. The Reds conceded 10 such goals in the Premier League, last conceding more seven years earlier.

With Ipswich unlikely to see too much of the ball, they will have to profit from dead-ball situations. Left-back Leif Davis is the man they can rely upon.

He recorded 18 assists in 2023/24, just one shy of the Championship record, from 2001 onwards, and the most by a defender. Five of them came from corners and free-kicks, while he got seven from the former alone in League One the year before. Davis’ delivery can get him an Anytime Assist and Ipswich on the board here.

Sam Morsy to Commit 1 or more Fouls

Premier League referees never took to Klopp. Will Slot have any more luck? He’ll hope so, with only six teams in the top flight suffering fewer fouls than Liverpool last season despite their wealth of attacking talent.

There should be a few here for two reasons. Firstly, referee Tim Robinson awards more per game than any current Premier League ref who has taken at least as many matches.

Secondly, only six teams were penalised more times than Ipswich in the 2023/24 Championship. Kieron McKenna’s enforcer-in-chief was Sam Morsy, who, with 73 fouls, was the division’s top bad boy. He’ll commit one or more fouls against the Reds.

Ryan Gravenberch to be Fouled 1 or more Times

A good pick to be fouled one or more times is Ryan Gravenberch. He was Liverpool’s best player in their friendly against Sevilla last weekend so should retain his place. While he only started 12 league games for the Reds last term, he suffered a foul in nine of them, plus three of his substitute appearances.

All the markets here are eligible for Paddy Power’s Super Sub market, so if the selected player goes off, the man who comes on takes on your bet. Gravenberch or his replacement is bound to get a sly kick at least once.
