UEFA Super Cup match at National Stadium, Warsaw

Real Madrid to win

Neither Real Madrid or Atalanta have had incredible pre-seasons, but in truth that shouldn’t really matter, as the real business gets started on Wednesday. Atalanta had a great 2023/24 campaign, winning the UEFA Europa League and finishing fourth in Serie A, but there’s been some turnover in their squad, with Gianluca Scamacca out with an ACL injury and Teun Koopmeiners handing in a transfer request.

Real have lost Toni Kroos, who has retired, as well as Nacho, but they’ve managed to finally bring Kylian Mbappe to the club, giving their team a new dimension. They’ve not managed to get their best players on the field in preseason, with so many away at the Euros and Copa America, but Carlo Ancelotti will name a strong team. Real have too much experience and talent and will beat at Atalanta team that are still bedding in new players.

Over 2.5 Goals

We saw Atalanta have the ability to find the back of the net with Ademola Lookman’s inspired performance in the Europa League final. Even with Scamacca out, there’s the arrival of Mateo Retegui, who starred for Genoa last season.

Then there’s that Real Madrid team and their fearsome attack. It’s not quite clear how Ancelotti will fit Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo into his frontline, although you’d imagine Jude Bellingham will move back to midfield. Then there’s the young talent of Brazilian prodigy Endrick and Arda Guler who impressed for Turkey this summer. There’s serious goals in this attack, so back over 2.5.

Kylian Mbappe Anytime Goalscorer

Speaking of Mbappe, we simply can’t overstate the impact the Frenchman will have on this team. They were the top scoring team in La Liga last season and they’ve added a player who is arguably the best in the world and absolutely lethal in front of goal.

He’s scored 30 or more goals in five of his last six seasons at PSG, with the only exception being one which saw him miss lots of games through injury. He’s electric and will fancy his chances against an Atalanta team who allowed more than one goal per game in Serie A last term.

Vinicius Junior to score or assist

The spotlight might be on Mbappe but we can’t forget just how good Vinicius has been in 2024. He started last season poorly but went into overdrive in 2024 and finished with 15 league goals and six in the Champions League.

We’re not quite sure where he’ll play in this team, due to Mbappe’s desire to start out on the left flank, where Vinicius does his best work. Last season was the time when the Brazilian become the main man in Madrid, only for the team to sign Mbappe this summer. Whether he’d admit it, that’s got to hurt and we can expect him to be determined to show why he’s viewed as one of the world’s best players and fancied to win the Ballon d’Or.

Berat Djimsiti to be shown a card

Guess who is going to be dealing with Real’s left flank? That’s going to be Berat Djimsiti who will be on the right side of Atalanta’s back three, with Davide Zappacosta acting as the wing back.

In the Europa League final we saw both Zappacosta and Djimsiti get booked as they had to deal with Alex Grimaldo and Florian Wirtz. With this game putting them up against Mbappe and Vinicius we’re going to take one of them to be booked, with the 31-year Albanian being the prime candidate. He’s not overly quick and could be found out here.
