Bristol City v Coventry
EFL Cup match at Ashton Gate Stadium, Bristol
TV: Sky Sports+, Tuesday, 19:45
Bristol City to Win
Bristol City fans thought they’d grabbed their first points of the season away at Hull on Saturday but up popped Oscar Estupinan to slot home a 91st-minute penalty for the hosts to rescue a point. Coventry, on the other hand, lost 1-0 away to Stoke City.
The Robins finished last season in fine form, winning four and drawing one, scoring 10 goals and conceding just one. The Sky Blue took just one point from their last eight Championship games last term. Over their last five away competitive matches, they won one, drew one, and lost three, failing to score in three of those fixtures. We have to back the hosts here.
Cambridge United v QPR
EFL Cup match at Cledara Abbey Stadium, Cambridge
TV: Sky Sports+, Tuesday, 19:45
Both Teams to Score
League One Cambridge United taking on the Championship’s QPR next. Both sides began their respective league campaigns with a loss, Cambridge going 2-0 down away to Stockport Country, while QPR lost 1-3 at home to West Brom.
The hosts have only lost one of their last five home competitive games, though, scoring six and conceding in all five of those matches. Rangers finished last season in robust form on their travels, winning two, drawing two and losing one, scoring four, and conceding five, so Both Teams to Score makes the best sense here.
Charlton v Birmingham
EFL Cup match at The Valley, London
TV: Sky Sports+, Tuesday, 19:45
Both Teams to Score
It’s an all-League One affair here. Charlton began the season with a 0-1 win away to Wigan while Birmingham’s Alfie May rescued a point for Blues in the dying moments at St Andrew’s Road.
Last season, the hosts ended the campaign going seven undefeated, scoring eight and conceding seven, and will be eager to keep that undefeated record. The away side ended last season with two wins, two draws, and a loss, scoring seven and conceding five. The public will probably fancy the away side here, but the hosts are a worthy foe on home turf. We’re backing Both Teams to Score.
Portsmouth v Millwall
EFL Cup match at Fratton Park, Portsmouth
TV: Sky Sports+, Tuesday, 19:45
Portsmouth to Win
Another all-Championship clash is taking place at Fratton Park. Portsmouth were sure they’d taken the points at Elland Road in a pulsating match when Callum Land scored two minutes into injury time to make it 2-3, only for Brenden Aaronson to equalise two minutes later to make it 3-3.
Pompey were obviously promoted last season. Of their last five home competitive games, they won three, drew one, and lost one, scoring 11 goals.
Millwall’s opening game was played under an understandable cloud, but they fought back well, equalising in the 88th minute. It looked like they’d rescued a point, but a 92nd goal from Watford’s Mileta Rajovic saw them taking the spoils. Millwall have struggled for goals for quite a while now, scoring just three over their last five on their travels, and that’s the difference here. We’re backing the hosts.
Wigan v Barnsley
EFL Cup match at the Brick Community Stadium, Wigan
TV: Sky Sports+, Tuesday, 19:45
Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals
Both sides began League One with losses: Wigan lost 0-1 at home to Charlton, and Barnsley lost 102 to Mansfield. That was, however, Wigan’s first home defeat in eight competitive games, so they’ll be looking to bounce back here.
Barnsley’s away record wouldn’t fill their fans with confidence, winning just one of their last five and losing the other four. But, we have to say they scored a hatful, banging in nine goals over those five games, and have enjoyed an 11-game undefeated run on their travels before those fixtures. We can certainly see both teams scoring and at least three goals being scored here.
