Luton v Burnley
Championship match at Kenilworth Road
TV: Sky Sports Main Event on Monday, 20:00
Draw
Two years ago, Luton and Burnley would both win promotion out of the Championship, but the very next season saw them relegated again alongside one another. Luton and Burnley will now have another crack at getting back into the Premier League, and the pre-season odds suggest there is every chance that could happen.
Monday’s match will be the opening game for these two clubs and the reality is that they will naturally improve as the season progresses. For what it is worth, Burnley are on an eight-match unbeaten run in this head-to-head series, and within that sequence they’ve won all four away battles at Kenilworth Road.
Luton have some injury concerns that will weaken them more than they’d like. There has been a big overhaul of players at Burnley in the summer, including many coming from loans elsewhere, so naturally, this group may need some time to gel together. Also, both teams got used to losing matches last season, which is ultimately why they were relegated, and it isn’t so easy just to flick a switch and be right back on it.
Burnley have history on their side, but they are still building under a newly appointed manager, so a case can be made for the draw here. It is tough to back against Luton in a home match, regardless of their injuries, as they will always create chances and make the opposition uncomfortable.
Furthermore, a draw is no bad outcome in a tough opening fixture. There are still questions to answer for these clubs, and getting to the end of the transfer window will allow us to really judge them.
Both Teams To Score
As mentioned already, Luton and Burnley became used to losing games, and it isn’t so easy to shake that off. Luton certainly gave it a good go in the top flight, but they never convinced defensively.
They kept two clean sheets all season, and they will begin this campaign defensively with key absentees. Reece Burke, Mads Andersen, Amari’i Bell, and Marvelous Nakamba are all set to miss out, but they should have Teden Mengi available despite going off in a recent friendly.
The Hatters were ranked first in last season’s Premier League for matches featuring both teams scoring. All bar three home league games did so, too. Burnley would also retain just the two league clean sheets, whilst 13 of 19 on the road also contained both teams scoring.
There shouldn’t be too much pressure in the first match, unlike if this was played near the end of the campaign with promotion places on the line. Under the lights at Kenilworth Road, it just has that feeling of goals.
Lyle Foster Anytime Goalscorer
Lyle Foster is a man on a mission. He took a step away from the game last year and he came back to end the season with a good run in the side. Dropping down to the Championship may well benefit him, and he has already been in the goals during the pre-season, including his recent emphatic strike against Cadiz.
Given Luton’s defensive shortage, there is the obvious potential for him to use his speed and clever movement to his benefit. New Burnley manager Scott Parker isn’t blessed with too many out-and-out strikers right now, so Foster is highly likely to start and at least play most of the match.
Quite an end-to-end game should play out, and Luton will take some defensive risks, which is just how they do things, particularly at home. Foster is a pure finisher, and he won’t need a second invitation to make his presence felt on Monday.
