Sheffield Wednesday v Plymouth Argyle
Championship match at Hillsborough, Sheffield
Sky Sports Football/Main Event, Sunday, 16:00

The opening weekend of the Championship continues with a Sunday serving of Sheffield Wednesday taking on Plymouth Argyle. Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to start their campaign with three points and come into this as favourites. They managed to beat Plymouth Argyle when these two met at Hillsborough back in March, but this is a new Argyle, led by England legend Wayne Rooney. After a disastrous spell at Birmingham City last season, can he get redemption?

Over 2.5 Goals

Both Wednesday and Argyle’s hopes for their seasons rely heavily on their managers. For Wednesday, it’s Danny Rohl, who turned them around after replacing Xisco Munoz last season and led them to 20th, something that looked almost impossible at one point. For Argyle, it’s Wayne Rooney and the hope that he can perform better than he did in his last role at Birmingham.

If we look at Wednesday’s final six games of the season, we can see that they scored over 2.5 goals in 50% of matches, and they themselves scored at least two goals in five of the six games.

We don’t have evidence for Argyle under Rooney, but we have seen them play very attacking during preseason, really focusing on attack and looking susceptible at the back. With both teams committed to front-foot, attacking football, we really should see goals here.

Ibrahim Cissoko Anytime Goalscorer

Nobody is talking about him yet, but consider this your notice. Plymouth Argyle’s new loan signing, Ibrahim Cissoko, is a seriously talented footballer. The 21-year-old is on a season-long loan from Toulouse and has already wowed the Green Army during preseason. It looks likely that he’ll start on the left side of Argyle’s attack, operating next to the striker and opposite last season’s top scorer, Morgan Whittaker.

With Whittaker still at Home Park, for now at least, he will be the main threat for opposing defences but Cissoko’s slight of foot and his incredible dribbling ability will soon make them a devastating duo. He attacks fullbacks, cutting either side to cross or shoot, and hasn’t been shy of shooting for goal during the summer. His price to score offers some great value.

Plymouth Argyle to Win

It’s totally understandable why so many people are expecting Plymouth Argyle to be relegated this season. After all they narrowly avoided the drop on the final day of last season and have appointed a manager with a poor track record, particularly his spell at Birmingham. However, there appear to have been some caveats to how he performed in his last job, and this environment could be one that suits him better.

His team will look to play attacking football, and that will leave them open to conceding, especially with the backline still one area of concern. However, Wednesday, as well as they performed last season, shouldn’t be odds-on favourites here, making Argyle the value play.

Both Teams to Score

Argyle have the potential to score many goals, but they also could ship them, meaning there’s plenty of value in backing Both Teams to Score too.
