Hull v Bristol City – Under 2.5 Goals

TV: Sky Sports+

To say it has been a tough summer at Hull City is a bit of an understatement. Many key players from last season’s squad are no longer on the books. Liam Delap, Tyler Morton, and Fábio Carvalho headline the loan players returning to parent clubs, but the Tigers have also seen four key players, including their best player Jaden Philogene, leave for pastures new. In addition to this, only two new signings have replaced them.

Their pre-season highlighted their lack of strength in depth and big issues in front of goal. The club insists they will address these concerns prior to the transfer window closing, but that won’t help them this weekend.

Bristol City had more of a clear-out from their perspective in the off-season as older statesmen such as Matty James, Andreas Weimann, and Andy King have moved on. Their top scorer from last season, Tommy Conway, won’t be involved due to refusing to sign a new contract. Ironically, Hull is reportedly set to be his next club.

The question that has to be asked of both teams is where are the goals coming from, and therefore that points towards Under 2.5 Goals being the obvious port of call. A 0-0 couldn’t be confidently ruled out, either.

Leeds v Portsmouth – Leeds (-1)

TV: Sky Sports+

Leeds are another team having to get used to life without their best player after 20+ goal winger Crysencio Summerville recently departed for West Ham. However, Daniel Farke still has two of the best wide players in the league in the form of Dan James and Willy Gnonto to call upon; two who would walk it into team at this level.

Farke’s men ended pre-season defeating Valencia and will be keen to start the new campaign strongly as they aim to put their play-off final disappointment fully behind them. A home clash versus a newly promoted club could be argued to be the perfect opponent they could have asked for.

Portsmouth did exceptionally well to win the League One title in John Mousinho’s first full season in management. He’ll have to keep learning quickly at this higher level, which is really a mammoth step up in class from the division below. The issue they have is that despite some handy signings, the group of players still screams League One standard.

Leeds really do have the ability to blow Pompey away on Saturday. They have a host of players proven at this level and above, and with a huge crowd behind them they are always tough to back against at Elland Road. Last season, they surpassed this -1 Handicap in 15 of their 27 Championship league wins.

Middlesbrough v Swansea – Middlesbrough to Win

TV: Sky Sports+

Last season ultimately proved a disappointment for Middlesbrough, considering the year before they reached the play-offs. In the end, they only finished four points off the top-six and a poor start to the season meant they were constantly playing catch-up. They’ll want a strong start here to really get them rolling.

At no point in the season were they ever higher than the 8th place in which they finished and given they were 16th or lower after all 11 matches it highlights the need to be quicker out of the traps.

The problem for Swansea heading into this weekend is that they still appear quite light as a good. Undoubtedly, they have added some exciting new signings, but those coming from other countries will naturally need time to settle into the league and its physical demands.

A home victory stands out as decent value on the Saturday card, knowing there are much fewer questions to answer about them than their opponents.

QPR v West Brom – Under 2.5 Goals

TV: Sky Sports+

This encounter presents two teams that have had particular struggles in pre-season scoring goals. That may seem strange to say when QPR won one friendly 11-0, although that was against an amateur Spanish opponent! The reality is that they suffered defeats to nil in their final three friendlies. Manager Martí Cifuentes himself acknowledges they have work to do offensively and he’ll be hoping recent signing Žan Celar can quickly get up to speed.

West Brom, who reached the play-offs last season, have endured a tough summer in terms of losing key players and having transfer restrictions placed upon them. They had a busy pre-season schedule, which returned just one victory, and whilst friendlies are only friendlies they enter the season well short of where they need to be.

Being hammered 4-1 by rivals Birmingham last weekend wasn’t great preparation. They are desperately short in the striker department after seeing Brandon Thomas-Asante sold and Daryl Dike still some time away from a return to injury.

There is little to go on in terms of believing many goals is achievable here and Under 2.5 Goals appears the safest call.
