I wasn’t convinced by Thursdays for a long time, nor was I convinced by the addition of even more European club competitions.

But now, I’ve done a full 180 on both of those things. Let me explain.

Firstly, there was a time when I’d feel like the weekend was at my fingertips on a Thursday finishing work, only to ultimately set my alarm going to sleep that night.

As for the Conference League? I thought it might take away from the prestige of domestic leagues in terms of finishing places, but all it’s done is provide lower-tier clubs with experience on the continent.

And you can see that based on some of the newer names in Europa League qualifying, some have had real exposure to the joy of European runs, and are now climbing the ladder to the upper echelons.

Does this mean we’ll one day see Kilmarnock in the Champions League? I mean, probably not – but what a sight that would be for visiting fans.

Anyway, let’s take a look at five tasty Europa League ties on what is now the best day of the week, I swear.

Elfsborg v Sheriff Tiraspol
Europa League qualifier at the Borås Arena, Borås
18:00

Elfsborg v Sheriff Tiraspol – Sheriff to win / Draw

Apart from a moment of madness from captain Moussa Kyabou in the dying embers of the first leg, there really wasn’t a huge amount of chances given up to the Swedes.

And it wasn’t just down to their discipline – it felt like Elfsborg lacked match fitness.

If that carries over into the second leg, they’ll certainly be prone to hanging on to what they have. Sheriff are only really in this competition stage because they managed to take advantage of the form of Vladimir Ambros and Mihai Platica down the stretch.

They’re as good as they were the season before last, and that, all things even, gives them a huge shout here.

Vojvodina v Ajax
Europa League qualifier at the TSC Arena, Bačka Topola
19:00

Vojvodina v Ajax – Ajax to Win

Vojvodina, which is essentially an autonomous region in Serbia, has seen some hard-fought battles in its time.

But this clash with Ajax will not be one of them.

Should we be concerned that Ajax barely overcame the challenge in the first leg? Not when you consider they’re mid-pre-season and Vojvodina have already have two games under their belts in the Serbian top tier.

It’s incredible the club held on to Brian Brobbey despite their lowly finish last season, but there’s enough quality in here to win the leg.

Cercle Brugge v Kilmarnock
Europa League qualifier at the Jan Breydel Stadiumn, Bruges
19:00

Cercle Brugge v Kilmarnock – Kilmarnock to win / Draw

I couldn’t listen to any confidence in the Belgians after seeing them got hammered by Westerlo at the weekend.

They were expected to go to Scotland and perform, it was the furthest showing from that possible.

David Watson’s equaliser twenty minutes from the end was more than a fair reflection of the way the first leg panned out, and given Brugge’s indifferent league result over the weekend, the Scottish side will fancy their chances of progression.

Botev Plovdiv v Panathinaikos
Europa League qualifier at the Hristo Botev Stadium, Plovdiv
19:00

Botev Plovdiv v Panathinaikos – Panathinaikos to Win

I mean, it was the most one-sided first leg of the lot, and only that they were coasting, did the Greek outfit ship a goal late on.

The general perception is that AEK Athens and Olympiacos should dominate domestically this year, but Panathinaikos remain strong, and they should get the job done here.

Rapid Vienna v Wisla Krakow
Europa League qualifier at the Allianz Stadion, Vienna
19:30

Rapid Vienna v Wisla Krakow – Rapid Vienna to Win

Context is important here. You might look at this game and assume Rapid Vienna were hanging on in Poland, but that’s not the truth.

They were comfortable in the first half, before former lunatic Wolves full back Bendeguiz Bolla committed GBH just before the half, and got sent off.

Despite having a man advantage for the entirety of the second half, Wisla Krakow’s anaemic attack couldn’t produce a goal until after Rapid had doubled their advantage.

Back on home turf, they should coast through this one.
