My favourite footballing period of the year is the end of July. I know some people might suggest that I’m being contrarian for the sake of an intro, but I assure you not.

Champions League qualification matters to everyone who takes part. For smaller clubs, it can give them a cash injection to propel them to a decade of domestic glory. And for huge clubs in bigger leagues, it’s the most potassium-filled banana skin they’ll ever encounter.

Not only are these fixtures going into second legs well and truly alive, well, bar one, but they also feature sides in leagues that the fella who sits at the bar down your local swears he knows about, only to get the country wrong on every occasion.

Norway is always the league that everyone forgets.

Sometimes, it’s because of how underwhelming their national team is, but the wage bills of Rosenborg, Molde, and Brann are very competitive on a European stage.

And while they don’t possess the advantage of being mid-season like they often do in this situation, they’re just a step above their Latvian counterparts.

4-0 was slightly underselling how dominant they were in the first leg. And while backing a side that is essentially through in a second leg is far from wise, Rigas will already be eyeing their Europa League qualifier in a couple of weeks’ time.

I expect the Norwegians to win again.

Maccabi Tel Aviv v FCSB – FCSB to Win

I understand that suggesting an away win might be odd here, particularly given the visitors’ recent records to Israel in the qualifiers. Still, FCSB were much better than their early domestic exploits suggested when Maccabi came to Bucharest last week. This second leg is taking place in Budapest, a country that’s far closer to Bucharest than it is to Tel Aviv.

Naturally the game can’t be played in Maccabi’s home ground, but combining match fitness with neutralising atmosphere should be enough for Steau to nick progression.

Dinamo Minsk v Ludogorets – Ludogorets to Win

Belarus is one of those nations where people know the main football club, BATE Borisov.

But once they remember that Minsk is indeed the capital, their minds are thrown back to a time when they reigned supreme in Europe, and nostalgia makes you feel like this will be tough. It will not.

Not only is Belarus slightly on edge as a nation, but the standard of football is appalling, and Dinamo might be the worst domestic champions in two decades.

Shakhtyor Soligorsk were docked 35 points before the season started, and Borisov had their worst campaign since 2005.

Ludogorets’ budget is over twice theirs, and that first leg is indicative of how one-sided this can be. Oh, and it’s also taking place in Hungary. Do you see a theme?

Borak Banja Luka v PAOK

Borak Banja Luka v PAOK – PAOK to Win

PAOK were toying with Borak for most of the first leg in Greece, which can be seen by how long the Bosnian Serbs were level.

There’s so much experience in this PAOK side, headlined by Portugal’s Vierinha and Austria’s Stefan Schwab. They just know how to navigate these ties.

Given they seemed to pick them apart with ease last week, you’d be unwise to back against them getting the job done next week, even in front of what might be the most vocal home crowd of the round.
