FC Zurich v Shelbourne
UEFA Conference League Qualifier at the Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich

FC Zurich to Win & Both Teams to Score

Damien Duff’s Shelbourne have won much praise in Ireland for their pragmatic approach this season and set three points above second-placed Derry City, with a game in hand in the Premier Division table. But face a tough test in trying to roll over Swiss side FC Zurich on Thursday evening in their Conference League clash.

The Swiss side finished fourth last season and have only played one league game so far this campaign so Duffer’s side should certainly have the advantage when it comes to fitness levels. Although, an argument can be made that the Swiss will be fresher and the weather forecasted for Zurich on Thursday will be around 26C, and that’s far from ideal for Irish footballers.

UEFA ranks Zurich as the 224th best club in Europe, while Shels are in 363rd place. The hosts have scored a respectable nine goals over their last five home games, only one of which was a friendly, while the Irish side have scored seven on their recent travels. With the hosts conceding nine over those five games, you’d have to fancy the Dubliners to get on the scoresheet. However, Zurich should be coming out on top.

Ajax v Vojvodina
UEFA Europa League Qualifier at the Johan Cruijff Arena (Amsterdam)
Thursday, 19:30

Ajax to Win & Over 2.5 Goals

Ajax welcome Serbian side Vojvodina to the Johan Cruijff Arena later in the evening in their Europa League tie. Ajax will be raring to go after last year’s disaster of a season but are yet to kick a competitive ball this season. However, they faced Zwolle, Saint-Truiden, Rangers, Olympiaskos and, well, Al Wasl over their five friendlies, so other than the Al Wasl match, they’ve prepared quite well.

Vojvodina won their opening game of the season 1-3 last weekend and their preparation matches were against low-ranked opposition from Serbia, Armenia and Montenegro.

Ajax should breeze this, but they only kept two clean sheets over their last 10 home competitive games, and the away side scored 21 times over their last 10 on the road. We all know that Serbian sides don’t go down without a fight, so we’ll likely see this one end with a 2-1 or 3-1 scoreline. So we’re going with the Ajax to Win and Over 2.5 Goals.

St Patrick’s Athletic v Vaduz
UEFA Conference League Qualifier at Richmond Park, Dublin
Thursday, 19:45

Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals

It’s not exactly going well for former Ireland manager Stephen Kenny at St Pat’s. Since taking over in mid-May, he’s overseen 11 matches, winning just three, drawing three and losing five. Their form at Richmond Park is decent, though, winning three, drawing one and losing one, scoring seven, and conceding five over their last five.

FC Vaduz need some explanation. They’re from Liechtenstein but play in the Swiss Challenge League, the second tier (they were relegated from the top tier a few years back), but because they won the Liechtenstein Cup, they qualify for European football. UEFA ranked them at 195th in Europe, St Pat’s a lowly 333rd.

The away side are sharp in front of goal, scoring 12 over their last five on the road in competitive matches, so we should be looking at the goals markets here. Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals has some decent odds.

Valur v St Mirren
UEFA Conference League Qualifier at the N1-Vollurinn Hlidarenda, Reykjavik
Thursday, 19:45

Both Teams to Score

According to the UEFA rankings, it’s 380th v 232th here, but the outright markets don’t exactly reflect the wide margin. That must be put down to the fact that Valur are third in the Urvalsdeild after 14 games, while St Mirren have only played four friendlies since mid-May. Two were against inferior Scottish sides, and the other two were against Fleetwood Town and Carlisle United.

Icelandic teams are pretty dependable in front of the sticks, and Valur have netted 15 over their last five at home and 14 over their last five. St Mirren scored seven over those four friendlies and eight over their last five competitive away games. Let’s stay on the side of those healthy stats and take Both Teams to Score.
