As much as you’d want Shamrock Rovers to come out on top here, it all seems rather unlikely.

What Rovers have on their side is that they’re playing at home, and they’re 27 games into their league season. Sparta Prague have played just one competitive game so far, a 2-1 win in their opening Czech Liga game last weekend. However, their friendlies saw them beating Sweden’s AIK, Slovakia’s Spartak Trnava, drawing with RB Salzburg and losing to Brondby; of those four, only the Slovakian side is the closest in rank to Rovers… and they’re still a good bit ahead.

That said, Stephen Bradley’s Hoops have scored in all but one of their home games this season, and Sparta has conceded in six of their last seven games, including two of those four friendlies mentioned above.

When comparing their last seven home vs. away fixtures, it very much looks like an away win. Rovers scored a decent 11 over their last seven at the Tallaght Stadium, but Prague rattled in 22 over their last seven on their travels.

Rovers should be scoring then, but the scoring talent in this Sparta side should see them winning it, and the 1-2 scoreline to the Prague side looks to have decent value.

The favourite to score here is tied between Sparta’s Nigerian striker Victor Olatinju and their Albanian forward Indrit Tuci. Olantinju was on the scoresheet in their opening Czech Liga win, but he only scored three goals in 30 league appearances last term, so let’s give him a swerve. Tuci played nine times last season and didn’t score once, so we can bin him off too.

Czech Republic forward Jan Kuchta made two appearances for the national side at this summer’s Euros. He didn’t score, but he was Sparta’s main man last season, bagging 18 goals in all competitions. If he starts, you’d nearly have to back him to be one of the difference-makers with that record in front of goal.
