One year after the spectacular World Cup in Australia, the Olympic Games start this week and holds the candle for Women’s major international tournaments in 2024 there are football medals to be won.
There are 12 teams in three groups at the Olympic tournament including FIFA World Cup winners Spain, Brazil, hosts France, Germany, the United States, and others vying for top place on the podium.
The women’s tournament is not age-restricted like the men’s is. So the best of the best in the game are showing up for their countries in Paris for the Olympics.
Spain’s squad consists of 15 World Cup winners alone and will battle against Brazilian legend Marta, new USA boss Emma Hayes, and Colombia’s Real Madrid starlet Linda Caicedo.
The tournament begins on Thursday and here are the latest odds on the favourites to win the Women’s Olympic Soccer Gold Medal.
USA
USA will be Emma Hayes’ baptism into international football, leading the USWNT into her first major tournament since leaving Chelsea. Her squad are favourites for the gold, bolstered by senior stars Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, and Crystal Dunn, alongside talented prospects Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith. Hayes certainly knows a thing or two about winning honours.
Spain
Spain hope to follow up their 2023 World Cup win by bringing home the gold medal from the 2024 Olympics. After all the off-the-pitch controversy, the World Champions arrive with a new manager and the same determination. 15 players from last year’s triumph will appear in Paris, including Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati.
France
France have not won the women’s football gold in 28 years, but they hope that host advantage can help change that in 2024. Their squad consists of an experienced core including captain and multi-time Champions League winner Wendie Renard.
Germany
Germany won the Olympic gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics and want to claim it back after falling short at Tokyo 2020. They are spearheaded by strikers Alexandra Popp and Lea Schuller but will be without star midfielder Lena Oberdorf due to injury.
Japan
Japan fell short as the hosts in 2021, losing 3-1 to Sweden in the quarter-finals. They also went that far in the 2023 World Cup but may find it difficult this year after being drawn in a group with USA and Brazil.
