Monday, 1am: Argentina v Colombia
Copa America Final
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
Premier Sports

In the early hours of Monday, Argentina will face Colombia in the Copa America final to round off a weekend of top footy action. The game takes place in Miami, where Colombia are desperate to win a second title, having last won in 2001.

This would be Argentina’s 16th, making them back-to-back winners, having won in Brazil back in 2021.

Colombia to Lift the Cup

Yes, Argentina are favourites and yes, they have Lionel Messi, but this isn’t a vintage Argentina side. This is very much their World Cup-winning side but another 18 months older, which becomes an issue when so many of your best players are closer to retirement than their 25th birthday.

There are also the Copa America performances to take into account so far. Argentina won their group with ease but only managed to score once against Chile, beating both Canada and Peru by 2-0. They also managed just a solitary goal in the quarterfinal against Ecuador before winning on penalties, and two of their five wins have come against a good, not great, Canada team.

In contrast, Colombia drew with Brazil in the Group Stage, smashed Panama 5-0 in the quarterfinal and beat a very good Uruguay team in a fiery semi-final.

James Rodriguez to Score or Assist

When you talk about players close to retirement, it’s probably a surprise to learn that James Rodriguez only turned 33 earlier this week. The Colombian who become a household name at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil has had a new lease of life and has rolled back the years this summer.

He’s been Colombia’s key man, with six assists and a goal across their five games. That’s four more assists than anybody else in the competition and he’s arguably been the player of the tournament, whatever happens on Sunday. He’s contributed to over a goal per game and that should continue here against an Argentina backline who are yet to be truly tested.

Argentina to have 4 or more Shots on Target

The Argentines are blessed with incredible attacking talent. That almost goes without saying when you have Messi in your team, but beyond him, there’s Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez, both very capable of creating and taking chances.

We’ve seen Argentina take an average of 14.4 shots per game at Copa America, with 5.8 being their average for shots on target. With Messi, Alvarez, and Martinez taking an average of seven shots combined per game, we should see at least four shots from the boys in blue and white stripes hit the target.

Rodrigo De Paul to Commit 1 or more Fouls

Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernandez are a solid midfield pairing. Enzo isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty, but his job is more about creating opportunities going forward. He offers the bark, but it’s De Paul who offers the bite and acts as the midfield enforcer.

He’s played four games so far and averaged 1.5 fouls per game, picking up a card, despite Argentina dominating the bulk of their games. In a hard-fought match against Colombia, we’re going to see him tested more, and he might have to drop in and help shut down James Rodriguez. We’ll back him to commit a foul.

Luis Diaz to be Fouled 1 or more Times

Liverpool’s Luiz Diaz has been one of the best performers for Colombia so far and forms a dangerous attacking trio with Rodriguez and Jhon Cordoba. Diaz has been a constant menace for opposing defenders and leads Colombia in fouls against (for any players with two or more appearances.)

He’s been taken out 2.2 times per game on average and the way he terrorizes defences with his speed and directness, it’s no surprise. He’s likely to be matched up against Gonzalo Montiel, who’s very capable of a rash challenge so we’ll take Diaz to get fouled at least once.
