Wednesday, July 10, 20:00: Netherlands v England
Euro 2024 semi-final match in Dortmund
TV: ITV and RTE2

Kobbie Mainoo to have 1 or more Shots

The England midfielder hasn’t been afraid to shoot from the edge of the box since he was given a start by Gareth Southgate alongside Declan Rice. Whilst Rice has also had a go from distance recently, it is usually Mainoo who has the license to roam forward, either carrying the ball or making third-man runs to attack the box. His only effort from inside the box came from one of those penetrating runs off the ball.

He has taken two shots in each start so far at Euro 2024, and that means that he has taken at least one shot in all four starts for England so far. Players who are confident to shoot from the edge of the box are difficult to stop because even an organised low block cannot close every space outside the area.

Mainoo currently averages 1.71 shots per 90 minutes and though he will likely not complete the 90, he will play long enough for his average to suggest he should get at least one shot away in this match.

Tijjani Reijnders to be Fouled 1 or more Times

The AC Milan midfielder plays in a deep-lying playmaker role in this current Dutch setup. If England have been studying the Netherlands, which they will undoubtedly have been, they will know that shutting Reijnders down is going to be important to disrupt the Dutch build-up.

England have the right type of players in the team to do this with Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo, plus Jude Bellingham working back. Reijnders has been used to being pressured in this tournament, often he can play his way out of it, but he has been fouled once in each of the last four matches.

Nathan Ake to Commit 1 or more Fouls

Whilst Ake isn’t a player who will often commit fouls, he did foul twice in the last match against Turkey. He is playing in a hybrid left central defence/left back role as the Netherlands use Denzel Dumfries much higher up on the right.

Aké will therefore be key in keeping a close eye on Bukayo Saka, who, if Gareth Southgate keeps Saka playing on the right, will be trying to take Aké on the outside and the inside, and obviously Aké will have to be tight to prevent Saka from having the type of impact that he had in the last match, scoring England’s equaliser.

Bukayo Saka to be Fouled 2 or more Times

As mentioned above, Saka has made a great impact on the right for England. Even the change of system for England didn’t seem to dent Saka’s attacking tendencies. What was most impressive about Saka against Switzerland was how he moved in behind the left-back off the ball, and he also attacked the outside enough so that when he really needed the space inside for his goal, the space was there for him.

He was fouled twice in that match against Switzerland. He was also fouled twice against Slovakia, Slovenia, and Serbia, making it four out of five matches in this tournament. He is averaging 1.74 fouls drawn per 90 over the last 30 England internationals but his prevalence as England’s key attacking weapon at this tournament has made him more of a target.
