Wednesday, July 10 – 8pm: Netherlands v England
Euro 2024 Semi-Final match at BVB Stadium, Dortmund
Where to watch: ITV1, RTE2

England were better against Switzerland for sure. I can’t say I was excited by the quarter-final performance as some, but I thought we played well and Switzerland were a good side.

We moved the ball quicker in this game and the three-at-the-back set-up definitely worked. We looked much more balanced when Luke Shaw came on. Kobbie Mainoo played really well and Bukayo Saka was unplayable. Ezri Konsa did so well too, so there were some good performances there.

And our penalties were magnificent! I don’t think I’ve seen five better, they were so calm and collected. I even said watching the shoot-out before Ivan Toney took his that it’s a bit different taking them in a Euros quarter-final than at Brentford – but, oh my God, he was better than ever!

Still, you really want to see this England side come out all guns blazing, it just doesn’t seem to be the manager’s way.

There has always been that little bit of caution throughout Southgate’s reign. I know the players have said it’s not coming from the manager, but there’s undoubtedly an air of it around the team.

They’re playing within themselves  – we saw how dangerous they looked when they needed to score.

But you have to say it’s working quite well at major tournaments when you look at Southgate’s record. It might be stating the obvious, but these competitions are quite difficult to win!

Navigating your way through to a semi-final has to be respected, at times I just wish we were more on the front-foot.

England to Qualify

This will be the biggest test so far against the Netherlands though.

They’ve had teams over the years that would just scare the living daylights out of you. This side isn’t one of those.

But there is cohesion about them, and they have players that can hurt you. Look at how Cody Gakpo’s been playing in this tournament.

And the character they’ve shown has impressed me. They’ve had difficult moments but have managed to get through them.

They have pace too, which can hurt teams.

It ll be very tight again in the semi-final. Holland will score in my view and I can see us scraping through again to the final.

I wouldn’t mind another penalty shoot-out to be honest, the way our boys took those penalties the other day. I don’t fear it anymore, even after just one shoot-out win.

But I think we’ll get it done. It might be an extra-time job, but I’m backing England to qualify for the final in the end.

Harry Kane to Score

Harry Kane hasn’t looked himself in the tournament. He’s been so good for England over the years, and even this last season at Munich he’s scored 40-odd goals, but he’s been anonymous at times in this competition.

You do just feel with someone like that that they’re a killer in the box – if you get one chance, you still want it to fall to him.

I mean, he’s Harry Kane! If create that one moment, he will score it.

Sometimes I feel like there is a lack of respect for what he’s done. He’s England record goalscorer of all-time. And it’s not like he’s off playing in Saudi Arabia like Ronaldo, for example – he’s just scored a load of goals for one of the biggest clubs in the world last season.

I know he didn’t win the league, but f***ing hell, come on! He’s class act.

I’m not going to get away from the fact that he’s been pretty anonymous in some of the games and he’s not played as well as others, but I’d still stick with him and I think he’ll score on Wednesday night.

Bukayo Saka to Have 1 or More Shots on Target

He had a great game against Switzerland, got a goal and has been England main source of creativity in the tournament. I’ll take him to have another effort on target here.

Cody Gakpo to Have 1 or More Shots on Target

He’s got three goals already and is clearly the biggest threat for the Dutch. He’s coming in off the left for them and doesn’t get the same opportunity at Liverpool but he’s making the most of it and is the most likely to trouble England’s goal.

Denzel Dumfries to be Fouled or More Times

He likes to go raiding down the wing, doesn’t he? I can see him causing some problems for England and he should get fouled at least once.
