England to Win on Penalties
Wednesday 8pm: Netherlands v England
Euro 2024 semi final at Westfalenstadion, Dortmund
TV: ITV 1 and RTE2
England were a little bit better performance-wise on Saturday but I didn’t think they were as good as they were making out on the telly. There’s still some frailties but they do look a better team in attack.
The Netherlands have got better as the tournament’s progressed which is obviously what you’re looking for but they do give up opportunities to the opposition.
They give up too many chances. Virgil van Dijk and Micky van de Ven are good players but I don’t fancy them as a team defensively. They’ve conceded five in five which is the most of any team left in it which probably tells you quite a lot.
They just seem to be easier to get at than you’d expect with the quality of the players they have. The three boys up top are interchangeable and they’re good but England will overcome them one way or another.
The Netherlands have come back in two games so far so they’ve got something about them but it all feels a bit risky. I wonder if they’ve got the mentality to get past England.
England can seriously change a game with the bench they have. People will say, ‘Why don’t you start with Cole Palmer and Ebere Eze?’ It’s not Gareth Southgate’s way and, as we saw, bringing that lot on can make a huge difference.
It’s actually really clever to keep them up your sleeve
He’s happy to be solid and then mix it up when he absolutely has to. All you can do is win and that’s what he’s done. As well as you’re playing, if players like that come on it does make you worried as an opposition.
The Netherlands don’t have that same firepower off the bench. In terms of England’s line up Marc Guehi will definitely play and Luke Shaw looked quite good when he came on, especially as he hasn’t played for ages.
It gave England a much-better balance and I don’t see any reason why England don’t continue with the back three in this game. Shaw can start as wing back or on the left of the back line. It’s a problem, but a nice one.
England are going to win in the end but I’m not sure it will be from open play in the 90 minutes somehow. Their penalties against Switzerland were excellent and they’ve got some fearless players in there. I’m going for England to win on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
