Copa America quarter-final

I love the Copa America for a few reasons.

One is that it actually produces shock results, and they seem to be based solely on the meeting of staunch nationalistic pride in small teams with low ego, and those high-flying money-grabbers who are plying their trade in Europe.

And generally, it’s the side who can balance those two things well, that wins the lot.

The hosting of the tournament is the US is obviously seen as a dry run for the World Cup next year, and it’s also given a glimpse to the world of how that nation has a long way to go before grasping the purity of the sport, particularly in its spiritual home of South America.

Ticket prices are too high, the US themselves were hilariously poor, and outside of the big hitters, there’s absolutely nobody at the bloody games.

Let’s take a look at the first of Saturday night’s quarter-finals with a juicy bet builder.

Colombia to Win

Among the sides you don’t think could win the tournament, Colombia are the most consistent and the least error-prone.

Yes, they probably lack youth in their key performers, but between this revitalisation from James Rodriguez, a man who’s barely kicked a ball at club level in donkey’s years is now looking like peak 2014 himself.

They haven’t lost a game of football since being downed by Argentina in World Cup qualifying, back in February 2022. Losing a game like this to an under-strength Panama team would require a lack of focus.

And it’s just one thing these boys don’t allow to seep in.

Both Teams to Score, No

Panama’s attacking threat was primarily based on the brilliant reading of the game by Houston Dynamos’ Adalberto Carrasquilla.

But he’ll miss out here for cynically scything down Christian Pulisic when they faced the USA. I mean, one look at his perfect jet-black hair and you’d probably want to chop him as well.

While I relate, it also means that Panama are stuck between being fully backs-against-the-wall which isn’t really what Thomas Christiansen has gone for in the group stages, and trying to ensure a collective attacking effort while being picked off as they struggle to keep the ball in tight spaces.

It could be a mess.

Jovani Welch to be Shown a Card

It was a big ask for Jovani Welch to come in and take the aforementioned’s place against Bolivia, but they are one of the poorest nations on display.

This is an entirely different ball game, where he’ll not only have to focus on trying to time through balls but also he’ll be going toe-to-toe with willing Colombian runners. Would you be confident in him successfully tracking Jhon Arias? No, me neither.

Luis Diaz to Have 2 or more Shots on Target

Panama, for all their valour, don’t focus their entire ecosystem around blocking passing lanes. Nor do they play a particularly deep line. There will be space for Colombian forwards to play off the shoulder which Luis Diaz probably does as well as any player at this tournament.
