Sunday, 02:00: Uruguay v Brazil
Copa America quarter-final
Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas
Premier Sports
If you’ve been watching the Euros and you’re merely on the night feeds tonight or getting back in from a bit of late one with the boys, you’ll probably see Brazil as slight favourites and nod your head.
But you’ve also heard of Luis Suarez and know that Uruguay are defensively sound, so it could be a ‘tight one’.
Maybe you don’t think Darwin Nunez is a good finisher because you spend your time watching FIFA streamers joke about him missing easy chances and you know Vini Jr as you’d call him is one of the best players on this earth.
Very early on, you’ll learn a few things that you didn’t realise, only to be totally shocked but never let on that you were blind to, in the group chat.
Marcelo Bielsa now sits on Uruguayan coolers when he’s not suspended, Vinicius Jr *is* suspended and Luis Suarez is a 37-year-old man who almost certainly will not start this game and is thus theoretically suspended from your calculations.
So please allow me to aid you in your attempt to stay awake by giving you some skin in the game. And hopefully Luis Suarez doesn’t aim to bite it off.
Uruguay to Qualify
I cannot guarantee this will be won in 90 minutes because of the low-scoring nature of this tournament so far. We’re seeing 2.2 goals a game, and while that’s primarily due to the high temperatures that are impacting play in earlier kickoffs in open stadiums, we’re moving away from cannon fodder in the knockouts.
It’s also certainly alarming that Brazil’s manager, Dorival Junior, who is certainly not Carlo Ancelotti despite their best efforts, mentioned they had to both focus on defensive structure and to learn to play without Vinicius Jr.
You could easily make the point that he’s been rubbish at this tournament to begin with.
But regardless of all of that, aside from Argentina, Uruguay have been the best side thus far and Brazil look set to drop out for reasons I will go on to explain now.
Endrick to Be Shown A Card
Endrick, who is two decades younger than some members of the Uruguayan squad has a bright future ahead of him. But instead of wheeling him out against Paraguay when they were coasting, they gave him only a handful of minutes.
You now want him to lead the line against one of the most disciplined teams in world football, international or otherwise, without the services of shoo-in Ballon d’Or winner.
He’s going to over-exert himself and do something silly.
Joao Gomes to Commit 2 or more Fouls
Brazil’s midfield three of Joao Gomes, Bruno Guimaraes, and Lucas Paqueta is a far-cry from the world-class unit people expect of Brazil.
There’s a severe lack of dynamism with those players, and with all of them playing in the Premier League, you just know that counter-culture from what people expect from this side in a major tournament is going to produce underwhelming results.
Gomes will do the dirty work and be punished for it time and time again here.
Darwin Nunez to have 2 or more Shots on Target
Nunez’s stat of a goal every second game for Uruguay is a lot better than you thought it was, no doubt.
He’s also bagged twice in this tournament and is quick enough in behind to not be bullied by an unbelievably physical pairing in Diego Militao and Marquinhos.
When the pressure is on them, he generally produces, including finding the opener against Brazil in their most recent clash back in October.
