It’s time to see if the adage of “winners getting better as the tournament progresses” will apply to England at Euro 2024. Ignore the fact they topped Group C for a moment and let’s have it right: they have stunk the gaff out almost consistently throughout the three matches.
History shows it may not matter. Portugal drew all three Group Stage games on their way to winning Euro 2016, for instance. But only two of the last seven eventual champions got fewer than England’s tally of five points across their first three matches.
While we said it about Denmark and Slovenia, Gareth Southgate’s boys should beat Slovakia. The sides have met six times over the years and a goalless draw at Euro 2016 was the only one which England did not win.
Equally, only one of the victories was by more than one goal. It’s not like the Three Lions have been blowing teams away recently, either, have they?
Southgate’s holding out for a hero. He’s got to be strong, and he’s got to be fast and he’s got to be fresh from the fight. Let’s look at four player bets to see who the hero, or villain, might be. Harry Kane to score anytime
Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane bagged England’s paltry total of two goals in the Group Stage. Who else has been scoring in competitive matches for Southgate recently?
Hmmm? Nobody of much use here.
If we go backwards through the games preceding Euro 2024, we see Own Goals netted against North Macedonia and Malta, while Marcus Rashford got one against Italy (with Kane also scoring in the latter two matches). Beyond that, you’re left with Kyle Walker from competitive matches this season, and if he scores here, I’ll give you the money myself.
It’s pointless to pick anyone other than Kane. He has scored in five of England’s last six knockout matches at major tournaments. It’s a pity the exception was the Euro 2020 final but he’s the best option we’ve got.
Lukas Haraslin to have 1+ shots on target
Paddy’s Super Sub offer came to the rescue in this market last time out. Cole Palmer replaced Bukayo Saka – who is still without an effort on target at Euro 2024 – and fired weakly at Jan Oblak in stoppage time.
As with all attacking markets, there isn’t much to go on for the Three Lions so far in this tournament. Kane had a trio of shots on target, with Phil Foden the only other player to have more than one (and he may not start). On club form you’d pick Ollie Watkins, with at least one in 29 of his league matches last term, but it’s impossible to envisage him being in Southgate’s XI.
So, let’s look at Slovakia instead. Lukas Haraslin, their wide-left forward, had an effort on target in all three Group Stage games – with four in total – and also in three of his final four matches in qualification. Chances will be at a premium for the underdogs but Haraslin looks to be the man most likely to test Jordan Pickford.

Declan Rice to be shown a card
Cards could be thin on the ground in this match. Slovakia received just two in the Group Stage, the joint-fewest, with England only collecting two more.
There are only four players left in the competition who committed more than four fouls without being booked. England don’t have any, but Declan Rice and Saka were penalised four times and didn’t receive a yellow card.
Of course, a booking isn’t awarded for infractions across multiple games. But Rice has committed at least one foul in his last nine competitive matches for club and country. As three of Slovakia’s most fouled players in the group stage started in midfield last time out, Rice will be kept busy and could easily receive his first card of Euro 2024.
David Hancko to commit 1 or more fouls
It can be hard to find value in the foul-committing markets. There’s roughly one every three minutes with the ball in play so it’s a very likely event.
Slovakia defender David Hancko is one of the outsiders to be penalised by the referee, yet there’s a good chance he will be there. England also suffered the second most fouls (41) in the Group Stage.
Hancko commits fouls quite often too. He fouled in the previous two games in Germany and in three of his last five Feyenoord matches.
On the left of the Slovakia back three, Sancko will be directly up against Saka, while Kane tends to drift in that direction at times too. He will be kept busy and it only takes one mistake for the ref to be on him like a hawk.
