It’s knockout time at Euro 2024 so who better to cast a beady eye of the forthcoming action than Mark Lawrenson?
The Soccer Soothsayer is back in the saddle to separate the wheat from the chaff as the competition gets serious with four glorious days of Last 16 action from Saturday right through to Tuesday.
All the big boys have made it to this stage one way or another and there’s a couple of sprightly upstarts looking to take some scalps in Germany.
But does Lawro fancy an upset or two? Let’s take at his correct score predictions and we’ve added the W-D-W calls into a long-range acca. Let’s go.

Saturday 5pm: Switzerland v Italy
They both kind of hobbled into the knockouts a little bit, Italy especially. Italy have been very ordinary so I’m going to go for Switzerland to win this 2-1.
Saturday 8pm: Germany v Denmark
Germany made a lot of changes for that draw with Switzerland so I wouldn’t be too worried about that. It’s just to keep the squad happy and get some minutes into the legs. I’m going to go 2-0 to the Germans and, with that home advantage, I don’t think Denmark have enough to stop the tide.
Sunday 5pm: England v Slovakia
Five at the back and shut up shop is the game plan for everybody against England now, isn’t it? I think England will win but I think they’ll get better as they progress because the better teams will actually want to come out and attack. I fancy England to Win 2-0. It won’t be brilliant but it will be effective.
Sunday 8pm: Spain v Georgia
Georgia have won their competition be getting here and they can go out with all guns blazing. Spain changed almost the whole team in their last group game so, again, they’ll be happy and rested. It’s got to be 2-0 to Spain, they’ve been very impressive.
Monday 5pm: France v Belgium
Belgium have limped into the knockout and they haven’t been good at all. The French are a little bit underwhelming, Kylian Mbappe’s scored one from the spot but I just look at them and there’s something not there yet. If Antoine Griezmann’s back with Mbappe I fancy France to Win 2-1 in an improved performance.
Monday 8pm: Portugal v Slovenia
I fancy Portugal to Win this 1-0. They’ve got so many players with so much experience in that squad that they just know how to get the job done. Cristiano Ronaldo’s been good, even though he’s absolutely raging that he hasn’t scored, and they’ve got some proper players. I fancy them to find a way to win against what will be a very defensive Slovenia side.
Tuesday 5pm: Romania v Netherlands
The Netherlands lost to Austria but they have gone some quality to be fair to them. Romania did brilliantly to top their group but I’ll side with 2-0 to The Netherlands.
Tuesday 8pm: Austria v Turkey
I’ll go 2-0 to Austria and, for me, they’ve been as good as anyone, pound for pound and man for man. If you want to see a team press they’re just amazing. They’re flying and I think they’ll be comfortable here. They’re so, so difficult to play against.
